First edition. Two volumes. Full leather binding with labels to the spine. Gilt titles and decorations. The leather has a little bumping and rubbing, but is still attractive. Very slight loss to the head and tail of spine to volume one. Volume number rubbed away to volume two. Contains a folding map and nine folding plates. (so ten folding plates in total). These are generally in good, clean condition with just a touch of foxing to them. The second plate (St Paul's) has some rubbing to the engraving with loss to the image. See photos. Er verkehrte mit William Buckland und Constant Prévost und war beeinflußt von Lamarck und Saint-Hilaire. 1817 war Serres der erste, der das Alter fossiler Knochen anhand ihrer Fluorkonzentration bestimmte. "Serres stimulated interest on the Continent in cave excavations and discovered human bones that he believed to be contemporary with the semifossilized bones of extinct animal species" (Gillispie XII, 317 f.).
