As the first world war broke out in Europe, Shackleton's expedition to the South Pole became trapped by ice. Their ship, the Endurance, was crushed and the men were forced to survive in and escape from one of the world's most hostile environment. Traversing glaciers, scaling cliffs and crossing treacherous seas in open boats, all the time threatened by brutal cold and hunger, the men, through their own strength and Shackleton's leadership, all made it to safety. This story makes the efforts of latterday adventurers look pale in comparison.

Spine gently toned, extremities bumped, scoring to bottom board, patch of rubbing to upper board. Book label of 'Ernest H. Shackleton' (not the explorer) to front pastedown, feps toned, else, clean and tidy. Clipped Sunday Times review (31.8.24) by Henry Murray laid in: folded, toned, notes and scoring in red pen. Good+ A pleasing first edition copy of May Sinclair's "really great book," Arnold Waterlow: A life (1924), from the collection of Ernest H. Shackleton (not the explorer, alas, who had died two years earlier); published two years after Sinclair's modernist mistress-piece Death of Harriett Frean (1922), when she was at "the pinnacle of her achievement" and was being described as "the most widely known woman artist" in both Britain and America (ODNB). Towards the end of the decade, however, Sinclair, who had Parkinson's disease, would retreat from the literary limelight.
