Novelty. Condition: Fine. None. First Edition. Original 1966 framed woodblock print with Image measuring approximately 15" x 19" on 20" x 24¾" on heavy art paper. Signed by Shahn along with his red chop mark, and also signed by printer Stefan Martin. Copy #55 of 300 printed. An important piece of revolutionary art invoking the collaboration between Black and Jewish American social justice activists. Twelve days prior to the publication of the portrait used as the basis for the print, on what is called Bloody Sunday, state troopers in Selma, Alabama, used billy clubs and tear gas to attack hundreds of nonviolent protestors marching with Dr. King and future Congressman John Lewis in support of voting rights. Shahn's hand-pulled print is based on his famous ink portrait of Dr. King that subsequently appeared on the cover of Time Magazine on March 19, 1965, the issue covering Bloody Sunday. The print is in fine condition, having been preserved inside the 24x36" wooden glass frame, which is contemporary with the print. The frame, which is in very good condition with a few mild scratches, is of carved teak wood painted a flat rustic grey, and is protected by archival backing. Ships in a special heavy padded box, insured. Signed.
