The wrecks covered are the mailship Lady Hobart, lost in 1804 off the coast of Canada; the Eastindiaman Cabalva, wrecked in the Indian Ocean in 1818; HMS Centaur, a 74-gun ship of the line which foundered off the Grand Banks in 1782, and HMS Litchfield, which ran aground on the Barbary Coast in 1758. This 1844 printing is not recorded in Library Hub or Worldcat, which record between them several printings between 1824 and 1855, including an 1837 printing at Cambridge also designated a ?New Edition, with cuts..

They did so ".under a deep concern for the honour of England, boldly pointed out the fact of the decline of science and the scientific arts. They investigated the causes by which so fatal a change had been produced, and suggested the means by which the sciences be fostered and revived. They felt evidently a fair amount of pushback: Some individuals, interested in science as a source of professional gain, and others, prompted by vanity and ignorance, endeavoured to thwart these appeals to the government and the country. A third class, already enjoying professorships, and other university appointments, repudiated the idea of a national establishment for science.[and] conceived that philosophers, like Puritans, would be disgraced by secular honours and dignities; and it was their desire that science, like virtue, should be its own reward. But in the rare and pure ether which they breathed, they had forgotten that in the two English universities, no fewer than nine professors had received from government an annual addition of L. 100 to their incomes.".

Bound in tan buckram with black r…ules and lettering on spine. Text clean, light soiling to cloth, spine slightly darkened. Rear hinge starting. Contemporary owner signature in pencil. Housed in a custom clamshell box of half-red morocco over red cloth, gilt lettering on spine. "They said, 'nothing serious is the matter' . I did not realize it, the whole time, even to the last moment . I would never believe such a thing could happen." The US Senate investigation convened over 18 days, with 86 witnesses informing the record at-hand. Among them, Bruce Ismay, the Managing Director of the White Star Line; Second Officer Charles Lightoller (who figures prominently in the Walter Lord bestseller A Night to Remember), Guglielmo Marconi, inventor and electrical engineer, whose name was synonymous with radio wave-based wireless system telegraphy, and whose company provided wireless service for both the Titanic and the Carpathia, the ship that responded to the Titanic's distress signal, and Captain Arthur Rostron of the Carpathia, among many surviving passengers and crew.The colossal meeting of hubris, poor navigation and exceptionally bad timing resulted in a disaster that reverberates ad infinitum. Books on the subject continue to pour forth, running perhaps fourth behind Jesus, Napoleon, and the Civil War as fodder for speculation, fresh insight and metaphorical discourse. This report, with dramatic first-person accounts, remains a foundational text. Scarce. Hardcover in custom clamshell case.

Later half calf, spine gilt, original wrappers bound in. 16pp. Isleworth, Hodgson, Departing St John's, Newfoundland, in January 1825, the Francis and Mary ran into trouble in early February, losing the long boat, companion, tiller in a swift gale and soon cut the foremast and bower anch…ors. The boat drifted for the better part of a month, during which time seven sailors died from hunger. It was on February 22nd that hunger prevailed and the first of the deceased was eaten by the survivors. "Also James Frier [a cook], who was working his passage home, under a promise of marriage to the female passenger [Ann Saunders], who attendedd on the master's wife; and who, when she heard of frier's death, gave a loud shriek, then snatching up a cup from the mate, cut her late intended husband's throat and drank his blood! insisting that she had the greatest right to it." The folding plate depicts the bloodthirsty scene in vivid detail. The ship was relieved on March 7 by HMS Blonde. The pamphlet includes yet another account of a shipwreck, that of a Dutch East Indiamen the Vrheid bound for Batavia in 1782. Rare. There were several pamphlets published, this being no. 5 in the series. Just one copy in OCLC. Not in Huntress but cf Huntress, 234C.

Phelps writes: "A mind enervated with grief & affliction for the loss of a dear and promising Son I can only attempt a feeble pourtray of the melancholy manner in which death has enter…ed our family[.] The 16th Nov William our seventh son left home and took passage from Lower Mystic for NYork from there he saild with Capt Loomis in the new packet Alabama for Mobile thence to N.O. allowing full time for his arrival and not hearing of them we sent to N London the 2st Feb and they returned information that they expected the vessel was lost the 11th we heard they were taken of the wreck and carried into St Augustine language is inadequate to describe the anguish of my mind while reflecting on the horror of incertitude at his fate. On the 28th we were informd they had not been heard of and were supposed to have been lost on the 4th or 5th Dec A thousand and probably more occurrences from his infancy up to the day he left home in succession, rushed through my memory and by a Mysterious Providence I was permitted to proceed in silence with unwearied toil to make preparation for his death." The Alabama was owned and captained by James Loomis, a trader from a prominent family in East Lyme, Connecticut. The ship was to take on cargo at New York City before proceeding south, and was last seen sailing away from Sandy Hook. Phelps' son, William Wallace Phelps, was fourteen. Single three-page letter measuring 8 x 10 inches.

Statement made by the two shipwrecked Aberdeen mariners John Harvey and Daniel Lamond before George Boyd, the Notary Public of Sunderland, detailing how they lost their vessel and cargo off Sunderland Pier in a storm: "[.] these Appearants set sail with the said ship [the 'Peggy'] fro…m Alemouth in Scotland [i.e., Alnmouth, Northumberland] on the 27th Day of September instant about one o'Clock P.M. staunch and in good Condition, and well manned, with a Cargo of Wheat on board, and proceeded with the said Ship to Newbiggen in the County of Northumberland, when about 4 o'Clock P.M. the Sea raged very high, and the said Ship sprung a Leak [.] the water still increasing upon them, they could with the greatest Difficulty keep the said Ship above water; - when the said Ship arrived off Tynemouth Castle, these Appearants let go the Anchor of the said Ship, but the Sea, still continuing to rage with great violence, they were under the Necessity of cutting the Cable [.] these Appearants endeavored to run the said Ship for Sunderland Harbour, (they not being able to get the said Ship into Shields Harbour) but when they arrived off there (viz. about 5 o'clock A.M.) there was six feet of Water in the Hould and these Appearants finding it impossible to keep the Ship above Water any longer, were under the Necessity of running her on Shore on the South-side of Sunderland Pier, in order to save their lives [.]". - While little is known of John Harvey, Daniel Lamond later entered the Royal Navy and died in the Battle of Copenhagen on 2 April 1801, one of the nine officers and 103 men of Captain James Walker's "Isis" killed or wounded when Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson's fleet defeated the Danish-Norwegian fleet. - Folded and with three drystamps (6d, 6d, 1s) and 8d stamp. Seal cracked. Signed by both mariners and the Notary, counter-signed by his clerks, Thomas Mewburn and James Dove.
