Cloth. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). Two smart volumes from Ward's XIXth Century Classics, being a collection of poetry from Matthew Arnold and episodic novel Cranford from Elizabeth Gaskell. Two volumes. From the XIXth Century Classics series. Edited by Clement King Shorter, a British journalist and literary critic. With a portrait frontispiece to each volume. This set contains: Alaric of Rome and Other Poems, 1896. A collection of the poetry of Matthew Arnold, an English poet and cultural critic characterised as a sage writer. Containing his prize poem 'Alaric at Rome', offering a retelling of the Gothic leader Alaric I's sack of the city of Rome in 410 CE, a landmark event symbolizing the decline of the Western Roman Empire. Cranford, with Which is Included the Moorland Cottage, 1898. An episodic novel set in a small English village dominated by women, where men are conspicuously absent from social life. The narrative offers observations of the peculiar rituals, customs, and dynamics of the tight-knit community, primarily focusing on the lives of its female inhabitants. Written by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, often referred to as Mrs Gaskell, an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light spotting to the fore-edge and endpapers. Age toning to the endpapers with a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Very Good. book.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 4to. On aged and worn paper; folded four times. Signed 'Clement Shorter'. The letter is headed with Sayers' Totnes address. He begins by explaining that the Sphere's 'Children's Supplement' has been abandoned due to 'the high cost of paper'. Turning to Sayers' other letter, he thanks him for offering to lend him a copy of Baring Gould's 'Strange Survivals', but that he will obtain his own copy. He ends by thanking him for 'the various information'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. A long and detailed letter, beginning: 'The situation is not quite as we thought it. Yesterday I saw Mr. Higgs at Downing Street and he explained to me all the circumstances concerning the consideration of Mrs. Latey's petitions. | The suggestion emanating from him, with the Prime Minister's concurrence, is as follows.' The plan outlined, as Mrs Latey is not eligible for the pension, is for a fund to be established for her, to which 'the Prime Minister would add [.] a sum from Royal Bounty - the whole to be sunk in an annuity for her. | The idea of losing this chance of a subsidy from the State is not a pleasant one, but it would be very distasteful for me and my brothers to appeal to people upon whom we have no shadow of a claim, just because they have been friends or admirers of our Father.' A capital sum of around £300 would only give an annuity of £20 or £30 a year, and he would decline to proceed if this were the case, suggesting that the capital be paid to his mother in installments until he and his brothers are 'able to make her comfortable'., adding: 'I have no doubt the Institute of Journalists and theh Newspaper Press Fund would co-operate, and doubtless the I.L.N. would contribute.' The letter continues for another three paragraphs. William Latey's distinguished career, beginning in journalism and ending at the bar, is outlined in his entry in Who Was Who. For more on John Latey, a leading figure in the world of Victorian journalism and founder of the London Press Club, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Shorter had succeeded John Lash Latey as editor of the Illustrated London News, and had on occasion worked with his son.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). A smart limited edition set of the works of English writer, George Borrow. With the original dust wrappers. Ten volumes of a sixteen volume set. Lacking volumes eleven to sixteen. Limited to seven hundred and seventy-five copies of which this is number thirty-two. The works of George Henry Borrow, an English writer of novels and of travel based on personal experiences in Europe. Particularly his time spent with the Romani people of Europe, who figure strongly in his work. Edited by Clement King Shorter, a British journalist and literary critic. This set includes: The Bible in Spain, volumes I and II. A travel book telling of the author's travels through Spain while working as a Bible salesman in 18351838, during the Carlist Civil War, where he encountered much opposition from the Roman Catholic Church and politicians. Lavengro, volumes I and II. Settled between a memoir and novel, following George, the son of an officer in a militia regiment, who takes to the road as a tinker and often associates with Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and generally sympathetic pen-portraits. The Romany Rye, volumes I and II. The sequel to Lavengro, thought to be at least partly autobiographical. It follows the journey of a learned young man living with Romanies and is considered a philosophical adventure story. Songs, Poems and Ballads, volumes I, II, and III. A collection of songs, romantic ballads, miscellaneous verses, and poems. The Zincali. A story exploring the living and culture of the Romani people, particularly in Spain, with a dictionary of the Romani language or list of vocabulary to the end of the text. Previously held in the library of Augustine Birrell, a British Liberal Party politician, who was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1907 to 1916. In the original green cloth binding. Original unclipped dust wrappers are worn with wear and chipping to the extremities. Sunning to the spine and repairs made with tape. The Norwich Edition of George Borrow Number One of Only 775 Copies - Beautifully Bound by Bayntun-Rivière BORROW, George. The Works of George Borrow. Edited, with much hitherto unpublished manuscript, by Clement Shorter. London: Constable & Co. Ltd.; New York: Gabriel Wells, 1923-1924. The Norwich Edition. Limited to 775 numbered copies, this being copy number 1. Sixteen octavo volumes (8 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches; 222 x 146 mm.). Title-pages printed in red and black throughout. Handsomely bound circa 1950 by Bayntun-Rivière in three-quarter medium green morocco over green cloth boards ruled in gilt, spines with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. A fine and elegant set in an especially pleasing postwar Bayntun-Rivière binding. A distinguished edition of the works of one of the nineteenth century's most eccentric and compelling literary wanderers. Linguist, traveler, Bible salesman, folklorist, and novelist, George Borrow created books unlike any of his contemporaries - vivid, autobiographical narratives infused with gypsy lore, roadside adventures, linguistic curiosity, and a deep fascination with the margins of European society. Borrow's enduring masterpieces include The Bible in Spain, his extraordinary account of travels through Spain while distributing Protestant scriptures; Lavengro and The Romany Rye, semi-autobiographical works blending memoir, fiction, and philosophical reflection; and Wild Wales, one of the great travel books of the Victorian era. His prose possesses a singular energy and immediacy, filled with colorful encounters, strange characters, and the romance of the open road. Edited by Clement Shorter and incorporating previously unpublished manuscript material, the Norwich Edition remains one of the most important collected editions of Borrow's writings. The present example, copy number one of the edition, gains additional distinction from its refined Bayntun-Rivière binding - a set equally attractive on the shelf and rewarding in content.
