A little light soiling but otherwise very clean and crisp. Housed in a purpose built clam shell box. Hill 1614. Hordern House Cook catalogue 50. Anders Sparrman was the Swedish Naturalist that sailed on Cook's second voyage in the Resolution (1772-75). After his return he presented a paper to the Swedish Royal Academy in late 1778 detailing his findings on the expedition. This pamphlet is a transcript of that paper and is the first appearance in print of any of Sparrman's work from the expedition. It was not until much later, and with J.R. Forster, that Sparrman published more extensive results in 1802 and 1818.…

Add to basketFirst edition. Octavo (21.5 x 14cm) stitched pamphlet, as issued. pp.[3],5-39,[1]. The text of an oration delivered by Sparrman, who accompanied Captain Cook on his second voyage, on the occasion of his election to the Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. He discusses the benefits to science and especially to natural history, already gained and likely to be gained in the future, by discoveries and investigations in the Pacific. He believes that New Holland will prove a fertile area for explorers and scientists, but since what lies there is still unknown he concentrates on New Zealand. He discusses the native inhabitants, geography and species. This is in fact one of the earliest books to focus on New Zealand. pp.39,[1]. Title with pasted-on engraved vignette. Unopened. Some soiling to the title & fraying to the outer-margins, but otherwise clean. Vg. [Hill 1614; Kroepelien 1217; Waller 11011; Parks Cook 50; O'Reilly & Reitman 8405].…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu.
