Über des Norwegers Hans Jaeger "Kranke Liebe" wird später besonders zu sprechen sein. Nur ein Dichter von der Kraft und unbestechlichen Redlichkeit Knut Hamsuns oder Upton Sinclair s - ich weiß leider keinen Deutschen von diesem Ausmaß -- könnte die Hölle beschreiben - könnte das Werk geben, dem Wahrheit der höchste Gott sein muß. Nichts anderes kann helfen als Wahrheit - man muß dem Gorgohaupt in die Augen sehen. Die Syphilis beginnt mit der Bildung eines harten Knotens (Schanker) an der Stelle der Ansteckung, meist an den Geschlechtsteilen, bei Übertragung durch Kuß oder unreines Trinkgerät am Munde. Dieses erste Stadium bringt nur selten Beschwerden oder Schmerzen. Die Drüsen in der Nähe der Ansteckung schwellen an. " (Seite 22) // " . Das Musterbeispiel einer nichts als literarischen, von allen Göttern der Psychologie verlassenen Darstellung ist das "Lebensbild", das Karl August von Bloedau zeichnet: "Lenaus Leben ist die Tragödie der Erziehung, nicht nur der Erziehung in der Kindheit, sondern auch jener höheren, die Welt und Ich dem Individuum geben . Verstand und Wille durchdringen sich bei Lenau nicht zu gegenseitiger Stärkung und Leitung. So geht das durch fast 100 Seiten fort: "Darauf angewiesen, sich mit der ihm im Grunde wesensfremden Welt abzufinden, suchte er mit phantastischen und kühnen Plänen ihrer Herr zu werden und trieb von einem Mißerfolg zum anderen. Daher sein gewiß nicht falsches Gefühl, daß er aus den anderen Menschen herausgehoben sei und seine An-schauung, daß das Unglück ihn verfolge. Daher die Melancholie und der Pessimismus.
