From the photographer's estate. Born in Freiburg, Germany, Michael Montfort began hi…s career working as a photojournalist for German magazines such as "Stern," "Quick," and "Bild am Sonntag." In addition to shooting numerous rock and jazz performances, he covered Queen Elizabeth's 1965 visit to Germany, the aftermath of the Six Day War in Israel and Egypt, and the May 1968 protests in Paris. Montfort emigrated to Los Angeles in 1973 and began working as a freelancer. Four years later, on assignment for the German literary magazine "Rogners," Montfort was sent to photograph Charles Bukowski. Aided by the case of wine he smartly brought with him to their first meeting, Montfort connected with the publicity-shy and splenetic poet. Over the next two decades, as both Bukowski's drinking buddy and personal photographer, he shot literary thousands of images of Bukowski and collaborated with him on titles such as "Horsemeat," "Shakespeare Never Did This," and "The Wedding." In addition to Bukowski, Montfort shot notable photographs of luminaries such as William S. Burroughs, Klaus Kinski, Brigitte Bardot, and a Jackson 5 era Michael Jackson. 9.5 x 7 inches, with half inch borders to the left and right of the image. About Fine.

Mit Brutto Tempo erfüllen sich der holländische Pianist und Keyboarder Jasper Van't Hof und die Saxophonlegende Charlie Mariano einen langgehegten Wunsch: die kreative Zusammenarbeit mit dem amerikanischen Ausnahme-Bassisten Steve Swallow, dessen Biographie eine geradezu unüberschaubare Masse an schöpferischem Wirken umfaßt. Van't Hof und Mariano begegnete Swallow bereits 1974; damals erlebte er sie bei einem Konzert der Formation Pork Pie (damals mit Gitarrist Philip Catherine), und fühlte sich sowohl von der Musik als auch von der Formation persönlich angesprochen. Oft wurde danach über eine Zusammenarbeit gesprochen; doch sollte es 26 Jahre dauern, bis es schließlich soweit war. Dann allerdings wurden gleich drei Monate lang Kompositionen getauscht, angespielt, arrangiert, verworfen, wieder aufgegriffen, bis schliesslich eine Auswahl von zehn Titeln allen Ansprüchen genügte. Trotz des intensiven Austauschs verlief/en die Arbeit/en an ''Brutto Tempo'' jedoch in völliger Harmonie obwohl (oder vielleicht gerade weil) es sich bei den Beteiligten um drei ausgeprägte Persönlichkeiten handelt. Wie sich herausstellte, haben van't Hof und Mariano mit Steve Swallow den idealen Partner am Bass gefunden van't Hof nannte Swallow bereits ''das letzte, endlich gefundene Puzzlestück, welches das Bild komplettiert''. Dieser Äußerung will man gerne glauben, wenn man ''Brutto Tempo'' lauscht: Das Trio pflegt die formvollendete Konversation, wobei jegliche Soli nicht der Zuschaustellung des jeweils eigenen Könnens, sondern der Komposition und der ihr innewohnenden Stimmung, sprich dem musikalischen Gesamteindruck dient. Und der ist schlicht exzellent: rund, ausgewogen und warm. Ein weiteres Meisterstück in den glanzvollen Diskographien dieser 3 hervorragenden Musiker, und ein sicheres Highlight für den Plattenschrank.

Seitdem haben sie zusammen reichlich Musikgeschichte durchlebt. Swallow spielte auf Kuhns Klassiker 'Trance', Kuhn spielte auf Swallows Alben 'Home' und 'So There'. Drummer Joey Baron wiederum ist mit Kuhn auf ECM-Platten wie 'Remembering Tomorrow' und dem blendenden Tribute-Album 'Mostly Coltrane' zu hören. Einige Stücke aus Kuhns orchestraler 'Promises Kept'-Kollektion tauchen hier in frischen Versionen wieder auf, neben sehnsuchtsvollen Balladen gibt es aber auch treibenden Hardbop ('A Likerly Story'), einige Swallow-Kompositionen, Carla Bley's gospeliges 'Permanent Wave' und die brasilianische 'Romance' von Dori Cayimmi zu hören - ein abwechslungsreiches Programm, durch das die Drei mit der Leichtigkeit von Meistermusikern swingen, die niemandem mehr etwas beweisen müssen.
