Oktober 1804 in Berlin) war preußischer Finanzminister. Struensee entstammte einer ursprünglich in der Mark Brandenburg ansässigen Familie, deren Name im Jahr 1477 in Neuruppin erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wird. Sein Vater war der Pastor und Theologieprofessor in Halle und späterer Generalsuperintendent von Schleswig-Holstein Adam Struensee, seine Mutter Maria Dorothea war die Tochter des Arztes Johann Samuel Carl. Er studierte zunächst in Halle Theologie, wandte sich dann jedoch der Mathematik und Philosophie zu und wurde 1757 Lehrer an der Ritterakademie in Liegnitz. Dort verfasste er einige militärwissenschaftliche Lehrbücher. Als sein jüngerer Bruder Dr. med. Johann Friedrich Struensee (17371772) zum Leibarzt des dänischen Königs Christian VII. und wenig später zu dessen einflussreichsten Ratgeber und faktischem Regenten von Dänemark wurde, ernannte er am 13. November 1769 seinen Bruder zum Justizrat. Carl August Struensee verließ jedoch erst im April 1771 Liegnitz und zog nach Kopenhagen. Dort unterstützte er die Reformen seines Bruders vor allem mit seinen Kenntnissen in der Finanzpolitik. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit konnte der Staatshaushalt ausgeglichen werden. Nach dessen Sturz am 17. Januar 1772 wurde er ebenfalls verhaftet, wurde jedoch nach einigen Monaten Kerkerhaft freigelassen. Anschließend kehrte er nach Preußen zurück, übernahm aber nicht, wie von Friedrich II. gewünscht, wieder sein altes Schulamt, sondern beschäftigte sich mit Volkswirtschaft, worüber er mehrere Abhandlungen verfasste, die den König bewogen, ihn 1777 als Bankdirektor nach Elbing zu berufen. 1782 kehrte er als königlich preußischer Geheimer Oberfinanzrat und Direktor der preußischen Seehandlung nach Berlin zurück. 1791 ernannte ihn Friedrich Wilhelm II. zum Minister des Accise-, Zoll-, Commercial- und Fabrikenwesens, ein Amt, das er auch unter Friedrich Wilhelm III. bis zu seinem Tod innehatte, ohne irgendwelche Reformen vorzunehmen. Die preußische Genehmigung zur Annahme des ihm zugedachten dänischen Adels erhielt er am 1. März 1789 in Berlin. Die Erhebung in den dänischen Adelsstand mit Namensmehrung von Carlsbach erfolgte am 15. Mai 1789 auf Schloss Christiansborg. Später war er königlich preußischer Geheimer Staatsminister und Mitglied der Berliner Mittwochsgesellschaft. Der andere Bruder Gotthilf Christoph Struensee, cand. jur. und sein Nachfolger als Bankdirektor in Elbing, wurde am 26. Dezember 1803 in Berlin in den preußischen Adelsstand erhoben."
