The author, a minister himself, sought to provide resource materials that would assist Sunday school teachers and other youth leaders in preparing engaging and meaningful lessons for their classes. Each outline follows a simple structure, beginning with a compelling text from scripture. The author then develops three to five main points that explicate the text, supported by relevant Bible references. The outlines conclude with suggested hymns to be used in conjunction with the lesson. The author's passion for reaching young people with the gospel is evident throughout the book. Each outline is carefully crafted to capture the attention of youth and lead them to a deeper understanding of God's Word. The collection considers various aspects of the Christian life, including the importance of seeking God early in life, the dangers of following bad advice, and the rewards of overcoming evil with good. Engaging with this book will help equip Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, and parents with practical resources to guide young people toward a life of faith and discipleship. Alcoholism's devastating physical effects were only recently understood and are often overlooked by society at large, who tend to focus on its moral implications. The author presents the evidence that alcoholism is in fact a disease of the body, whose treatment requires medical intervention and not merely moral suasion. This insightful book's findings are significant for expanding our understanding of the nature of alcoholism, leading to more effective treatments in the present day and potentially saving countless lives from this terrible affliction. 87 pages. Hardcover: H 15.75cm x L 10cm. Original dark brown cloth boards marred by patches of surface chipping and slender wear along edges; spine's surface cloth mostly perished with recessed losses into front and rear joints and underlying paper backstrip exposed lengthwise, shallow chipping at spine head but with spine heel worn even with text block's bottom edge. Joints/hinges as well as binding remain firm. Toning to front and rear free endpapers; antiquarian ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper as well; full page of handwritten essay in pencil on front flyleaf; pencil notes on blank bottom half of page 53; varied toning and foxing to interior text leaves; several rear leaves affected by light moisture stains at their fore-edge margins. With unpaged b/w frontispiece illustration and unpaged b/w plates between pages 40-41 and 64-65 all signed "Howland." A poor copy per the aforementioned weak exterior cosmetics but this 1855 Nashville edition is unrecorded by OCLC and nor is it cited by Ronald R. Allen in his bibliographical reference TENNESSEE IMPRINTS 1791-1875. Thomas O. Summers was editor of the weekly newspaper Nashville Christian Advocate.

Second Nashville, Tennessee edition. 334, [2] pages. Hardcover: H 15.75cm x L 10.25cm. Original dull green cloth with some light mottling and staining; spine's gilt stamped floral decoration and lettering slightly dulled and flaked but still easily legible. Mild toning and soiling to edges; endpapers toned; past owner's name and personal book number written in antiquarian ink on front free endpaper with associated ink impression onto opposing front pastedown; pencil signatures of same owner on both front flyleaves; green powdered substance adhered to rear endpapers as well as on rear flyleaf and opposing publisher's advertising page; mostly light foxing to interior leaves; top corner of pages 271-272 creased from past fold-down. Binding is firm. A good+ copy. Immediately following last text page 334 is an unpaged single leaf (i.e. two pages) featuring list and prices of various M.E. Church, South publications. English Baptist minister John Foster was a fairly prolific essayist with this posthumous edition featuring a "Biographical Introduction" regarding Foster on pages 7-12 by Thomas O. Summers (1812-1882). One of the great theologians and intellects of the Methodist Church, Reverend Summers was elected in 1850 by the general conference as editor of all church books and tracts. From 1866 to 1878 he was editor of the weekly newspaper [Nashville] Christian Advocate. Summers was professor of systemic theology at Vanderbilt University beginning in 1874 and was dean of the theological faculty from 1875 until his death in 1882. Evidently a scarce antebellum Nashville, Tennessee imprint for OCLC cites copies at only three member institutions. Bibliographical reference: Ronald R. Allen TENNESSEE IMPRINTS 1791-1875 #3971. There was a preceding 1855 Nashville edition (OCLC also citing only three holding institutions; Allen #3651) as well as later Nashville editions in 1873 (Allen #7955) and 1883.
