The work, which in its English original went through a number of editions from the 1760s on, examines tabes dorsalis, a result of neurosyphilis resulting in both pain and ataxia. The Italian translator suggests that it might be a suitable accompaniment to Tissot's L'onanisme and Bienville's La nymphomanie, although neither of these is mentioned in the text, nor on the English title-page. The author describes the symptoms of syphilis, both physical and psychological ('the company of the female sex he loves indeed, but the apprehensions that he may be cut off from nuptial felicity, interrupts the fruition of their pleasing converse. Thus deeply dejected, he excludes himself from society, wanders into retirement, and it is well if he seeks not to destroy himself at last'); he concludes by suggesting some possible treatments. A list of books offered by Graziosi, at the end, includes works by Soave, Voltaire, Rousseau, and Franklin, as well as a study of Montgolfier's ballooning experiments. It refers to the discovery of America as insulis aetate nostra repertis and discusses the exportation of the drug from Jamaica and Haiti. The author, physician to Pope Paul III, adds an interesting chapter on the healing properties of wine and its use together with the wood . The publisher has conveniently included into this volume the text of Fracastoro s classic poem on syphilis which gave the disease its name. Tailend blank margin of index lightly waterstained, otherwise a good copy.
