Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an anthology of funny, witty, and absurd etiquette guides, poems, and short stories from the 19th century, a time when etiquette and social rules were seen as paramount. It is packed with humorous and satirical takes on everything from table manners to courtship and marria…ge, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the social customs and values of the Victorian era. Themes in the book include concerns with politeness, respecting rank and file, courtship, marriage, fashion, and social standing. The author pokes fun at the seriousness with which society treated these topics and scrutinizes the upper-class preoccupation with social rules, rank, and money. Ultimately, the book serves as a reminder that while social norms change over time, the human desire for connection and belonging remains constant. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

George Cruikshank (1792-1878)--sometimes called the "19th century Hogarth"--was one of the stars of British caricature and illustration during the first half of the nineteenth century. His illustrations for Dickens and early friendship with that author contributed greatly to the "Sparkler's" enormous success. One of the brilliant caricaturist-and-illustrator's finer productions. Nineteen annual booklets appeard from 1835 through 1858. Scarce in wrappers.
