ABOUT THE WORKS The works are cornerstones of English caricature and macabre satire. The English Dance of Death stands among Thomas Rowlandson's most ambitious and enduring works, offering a humorous yet biting commentary on British society in the early 1800s. The English Dance of Death is notable for modernizing the Danse Macabre genre (historically imbued with stoic, moral prose or verse that accompanied allegorical emblems featuring death) for a contemporary audience with humorous verse to match the delightfully satirical social commentary of the illustrations. The publications were also a tour-de-force in showcasing advances in print technology and color reproduction. CONDITION REPORT The volumes are in VG+ condition. Exterior and bindings: Square spines, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Colorful, supple leather. Gilt work in excellent condition, given the age. Rubbing to extremities and joints, slight bumping of corners. A few minor spots of soiling. Spines uniformly darkened to a rich burgundy. Dance of Life with slight splitting along foot of joints. Volume I of Dance of Death with slight splitting at head of joints. Interior: Silk doublures colorful, fresh and lustrous. Pages are generally a mix of clean, bright and white and toned in Dance with Death. Pages adjacent to plates generally toned to browned; offsetting from plates. In Dance with Life pages are bright and white throughout with light offsetting on pages near plates and didn't see any foxing. Mostly light, scattered foxing in Dance with Death Volume I (with a few pages in Vol I heavily foxed), few spots in Volume II. No writing, bookplates or ex libris marks. Light marginal finger soiling. On odd crease, a few bent corners. A few margin chips, nicks and feathered margins. The plates are beautiful and colorful and generally near fine to fine, with plate margins outside the image more toned. All in all, a handsome set of two hand-colored Rowlandson works in Zaehnsdorf very fine binding, entirely complete in collectible condition. . Exquisite Zaehnsdorf fine, straight-grained full morocco.

A very scarce Irish printing of this 1775 sermon delivered in Philadelphia by Thomas Coombe, with a dedication to Benjamin Franklin, "illustrious citizen and philosopher." Coombe was an Anglican minister and Loyalist in Philadelphia, and formerly the Chaplain for the Marquis of Rockingham. His sermon, as a result, calls for restraint amongst the citizenry of Philadelphia in the wake of the opening battles of the American Revolution. Coombe was imprisoned for his loyalty after the Declaration of Independence, but was allowed to return to England in 1779.
