Scarce image of a coastal scene in Penang, printed by the Danish publisher I. W. Tegner & Kittendorf Lithografiske Institut founded in 1850 by Isac Wilhelm Tegner (1815-1893) and Johan Adolph Kittendorff (1820-1902) and lasting until Tegner's death in 1893. By 1850, Penang was under British colonial rule, having been ceded by the Sultanate of Kedah in 1786 and integrated into the Straits Settlements by the British East India Company.

Elegant samtidigt helbind af brunt skind med ryforgyldning og righoldig blindpræget dekoration på permerne. Navn (L.W. Castenschiold) på forsatsbladet. Øverst på det litograferede titelblad anført "Admiral Sten Bille" med samtidig hånd. * Formålet med korvetten Galatheas lange togt 1845-47 under kommando af Steen Bille var at overdrage de danske besiddelser i Indien til Storbritannien, indlede kolonisering af Nikobarerne og foretage etnografiske og hydrografiske undersøgelser. Koloniseringen af Nikobarerne blev hurtigt opgivet, men Bille hjembragte betydeligt videnskabeligt materiale. Thornams detaljerede billeder dækker hele togtet og er et smukt eksempel på gengivelse af endog meget fremmede steder med velvillige danske guldalderbriller.
