Literatur: Rosenbach 3.- Sehr guter Abdruck, vollrandig. Der Sohn eines jüdischen Bä…ckermeisters kam 1873 nach Berlin. Von 1879 bis 1880 studierte Lesser Ury bei Andreas Müller (1811-1890) und Heinrich Lauenstein (1835-1910) an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf Malerei, anschließend in Brüssel. Er sammelte Paris wertvolle Erfahrungen unter anderen bei Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (1834-1912), erkundete Flandern und München. Dort bewarb er sich erfolgreich an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste, wo er am selben Tag aufgenommen wurde wie Ernst Oppler (1867-1929). Noch vor Oppler zog Ury bereits 1887 nach Berlin, von 1920 bis zu seinem Tode hatte er Atelier und Wohnung am Nollendorfplatz 1 in Berlin-Schönberg. 1890 hatte Lesser Ury auf Empfehlung von Adolph Menzel (1815-1905) den Michael Beer-Preis erhalten, der mit einem Stipendium der Berliner Akademie der Künste einherging. Dies ermöglichte ihm eine mehrmonatige Reise durch Italien, mit Aufenthalt in der Villa Strohl-Fern in Rom. Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) holte Ury an die Berliner Secession". Ein großer Förderer war der Industrielle Carl Schapira. Zu seinen bevorzugten Motiven gehörten die Straßen Berlins und die Landschaft der Mark Brandenburg. Vor allem für die Weltstadt Berlin empfand Ury ab dem ersten Moment eine ganz besondere Sympathie. Dies schlug sich so sehr in seiner Kunst nieder, dass er zu seinem 60. Geburtstag vom Oberbürgermeister Berlins als künstlerischer Verherrlicher der Reichshauptstadt" geehrt wurde.

Der aus jüdischer Familie stammende Berliner Maler und Graphiker Lesser Ury brach 1879 eine begonnene kaufmännische Lehre ab, um sich in den 1880er Jahren an verschiedenen Orten und an maßgeblichen Kunstakademien der Zeit auszubilden: Düsseldorf, Paris, Brüssel und schließlich München sind die Stationen, nachdem er 1885 bei der Berliner Kunstakademie eine Ablehnung erfuhr. 1887 kehrte er in seine Heimatstadt zurück und stellte unter anerkennender Kritik erstmals 1889/1890 in der Galerie von Fritz Gurlitt aus. Adolph Menzel (1815-1905) förderte ihn, auch mit Max Liebermann (1847-1935) war Lesser Ury anfangs sehr freundschaftlich verbunden, bis es wenig später zum rivalisierenden Zerwürfnis kam. Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) konnte den Künstler schließlich 1914 an die Berliner Secession" holen, die Galeristen Paul Cassirer und Heinrich Thannhauser stellten ihn 1916/1917 aus, 1922 zeigte die Secession eine 150 Gemälde umfassende Schau. Das druckgraphische Werk Lesser Urys hatte sich schon um 1920 in Sammlerkreisen seinen Platz erobert.
