From the Foreword: Last year, Stella and I -were standing on the porch looking somberly out over the tree-limbed debris left by Hurricane Georges. The hurricane had passed through the evening before, .A shift in the predicted storm path had changed .a complete catastrophe to just a lawn filled with debris . our mind still clung to thoughts of catastrophe. Stella suddenly pointed out towards the water to our east. There, just beyond the end of a neighbor's wooden pier, I saw a long line of about ten American White Pelicans flying impossibly low over the water . It had been fifteen years since Stella and I had last seen those large beautiful birds. That afternoon, the two of us were seeing them once more. As we watched, the black-edged wings of the lead bird began a hard slow beat, raising the bird up from about afoot above the water to about eight or ten feet. There, its wings stopped their beat and remained motionless and the large bird began again a long, drawn-out, controlled gliding fall toward the water. Behind the lead, in an undulating wave, the other birds began their rise and fall in slow, exquisitely graceful ballet step. They are indeed beautiful birds. . If luck will have it in the years to come, Stella and I, together, will see them another time. 180 pages.
