First and sole edition of this notably scarce and highly appealing suite of plates, this the rare hand-coloured issue; the copies at the British Library and V&A copy are uncoloured. Abbey remarks that it was "probably privately produced for distribution to Broughton's (and Delamotte's?) friends". Described by a contemporary reviewer as, "one of the most interesting series that could be imagined. some of the sketches are capital, and admirably drawn on zinc", the suite comprises views of Gibraltar (two, one showing the P&O paddle steamer Lady Mary Wood), Malta, Aden, Suez, Cairo, Alexandria, Karnak, "Crossing the Desert, Arabs Waiting" (a scene near the Giza pyramid complex), "Hotel in the Desert", and "Hotel near Cairo". The attractive pictorial title page is a nicely composed view through a gateway to a river and temple beyond, framed by exotic fauna; while the vivacious wrapper illustration shows an insouciant camel rider enjoying a pipe while glancing over his shoulder, his mount at the gallop. Surgeon-Major Francis Broughton (1817-1882) served with the Bombay Medical Department in New Zealand aboard the East Indiaman Elphinstone, was present during the Flagstaff War of 1845-6, and the capture of the pah (defensive settlement) of the prominent Maori chief Te Ruki Kawiti. He also served during the Indian Rebellion, and was present at the taking of Kolapur. He was appointed Surgeon in 1860, and Surgeon-Major in 1863, retiring in 1871. His sketches were no doubt worked up by William Delamotte (1775-1863) before being transferred to zinc plates, which closely resemble lithographs. Delamotte grew up in Weymouth, where he is said to have attracted the notice of George III, a frequent visitor to the resort, and "to have been placed by him as a pupil of Benjamin West, president of the Royal Academy, the king's favourite artist. Delamotte entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1794, having first exhibited at the Royal Academy in the previous year. He continued to exhibit paintings and watercolours each year until 1805, and from 1809 at irregular intervals until 1850. In his early watercolours Delamotte was influenced by Thomas Girtin, but he soon established his own reputation. He was an excellent architectural draughtsman, and also a sympathetic recorder of the landscape, at first in and around Oxford, on the Thames, in Wales, Cumberland, and Derbyshire, and later also on the continent" (ODNB). An online search of institutional libraries shows copies at just 4 locations, British Library and Cambridge only in the UK, Chicago and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin; we have traced an uncoloured set at the V&A.
