Published by Geneve, par Estienne Gamonet, Switzerland, 1609
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. An extremely scarce, early 17th century edition of Wecker's Great Dispensary, or General and Particular Treasury of Preservatives, being a new edition, and translated into French by Jean Du Val, physician of Issoudun. The General Treasury of Preservatives deals with the general principles of chemistry and alchemy; followed by The Particular Treasure of Preservatives with a second title page, which describes numerous pharmaceutical preparations: oils that beautify the face, potions to moisten the stomach, waters that warm the chest, cerates, perfumes, tablets, and much more. There is also a concluding section on how to separate and extract the forms of metals and minerals. The General Treasury has been beautifully illustrated with quite a few woodcuts of various tools and implements for alchemical and in general, chemical concoctions. There is also a large woodcut to the penultimate leaf as well. A Swiss physician and philosopher, Wecker wrote several works about medicine, some of which were in both French and Latin. After publishing his Secrets et Merveilles de Nature, Wecker moved to Basel, likely having fled accusations of sorcery, as the work touched on various forms of magic, alchemy, chemistry, astronomy and astrology, and other controversial subjects for the period. USTC records 7 existing copies of this edition in libraries. One vellum bound volume in quarto, (16)+ 286+(16)+1336 pages This volume is in very good shape, with some wear and old staining to the binding, with leather loss to the lower corner. There is foxing and soiling throughout.

First Edition
First edition in English of Reade's 17th century adaptation of Johann Jacob Wecker's De secreti libri xvii [Book of Secrets] of 1582. Folio, bound in three quarter polished calf over marbled boards with gilt titles and ruling to the spine, woodcut printer's device to the title, woodcut head and tailpieces and initials, numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. In near fine condition. Lacking the engraved frontispiece, title page supplied. Exceptionally rare. Based on Swiss physician and philosopher Johannes Jacob Weckerâs De secreti libri xvi [Book of Secrets], first published in 1582, Eighteen Book of the Secrets of Art & Nature was conceived as âan Encyclopaedia of Arts and Sciences, interwoven with facetious Conceits to recreate the fancyâ. The compiler, Dr R. Read or Reade gives a long list of âAuthors made use of in this Treatiseâ which adds, Culpeper, Digby, Galileo, Harvey, Hobbs, Lady Howard and Platt to those used by Wecker. He has also inserted his own name between Rondolet and Rhasis. Wecker's original list remains one of the most unusual assortments of authors ever assembled. As is seen in other 16th and 17th century Books of Secrets, every imaginable topic of natural science, natural magic, arts, trades, sports and pastimes is included with a substantial compilation of recipes, experiments, and observations extracted from classical, medieval, and contemporary authors. Books of Secrets constituted one of the most popular genres in early modern scientific publishing and supplied a great deal of practical information to an emerging new, middle-class readership, leading some historians to link them with the emerging secularistic values of the early modern period and to see them as contributing to the making of an age of how-to.
