Er hat hier, unabhängig von seinen früher erschienenen Arbeiten, sich bemüht, den neuen und veränderten Verhältnissen Rechnung zu tragen. Daß diese Volksausgabe einem weiten Kreis von Interessenten zugänglich gemacht werden kann, ist vor allem der Großzügigkeit des Verlegers zu danken. Wenn hier über die einzelnen Gegenden des Orients in bezug auf ihre Teppichproduktion gesprochen wird, so kann keine kunstwissenschaftlich abgefaßte Entwicklung gebracht und über Stil und Produktion früherer Jahrhunderte nicht gesprochen werden, weil dies in Kürze nicht zu machen ist. Der Begriff ?antik" hört beim Teppich nach 170o auf. Was im Handel heute vorkommt, sind schon mit Ausnahme halbalte Stücke, die aber meistens auch nicht älter sind als 5o bis 6o Jahre. Von einem Täbris, an welchem Ort die Produktion für Europa erst seit etwa 186o aufgenommen wurde, von antik zu sprechen, wirkt bei allen lächerlich, die mit der Materie vertraut über die Erzeugnisse früherer Jahrhunderte Bescheid wissen. Viele handelsübliche Namen sind Qualitätsbezeichnungen. Es kommen deren immer neue hinzu. Auch über die einzelnen Ursprungsorte und die Kennzeichen ihrer Produktion kann hier nichts Präzises ausgeführt werden. Die Arbeit soll ein kurzer Wegweiser bleiben. Es war auch hier wieder das Bestreben des Verfassers, sachlich und klar zu sein und die Materie aus Liebe zu ihr der Mythen und unsachlichen Märchen zu entkleiden. Seit über zwanzig Jahren vom Standpunkt des Liebhabers und wissenschaftlich Forschenden interessiert, ist versucht worden, auch (die jahrelangen Erfahrungen des Verfassers als Kunsthändler zu verwerten. In dem Bemühen, mit Ehrlichkeit der Sache und seinem Beruf zu dienen, sind trotzdem hart klingende, wenn auch vielleicht gerechtfertigte Urteile vermieden worden, weil sie hier nicht begründet werden konnten.
