A very rare survival from 1922, the year that marked the first appearance in print of James Joyce's Ulysses, with links to the book's publication history. This is a presentation copy inscribed by the author to Raymonde Linossier (1897-1930), one of the typists of Ulysses, and a member of the inner circle of Sylvia Beach, the first publisher of Ulysses. Linossier worked at the "Circe" episode in the winter of 1921, after several typists refused to type this section of the book, which takes place in a brothel. Linossier was a pioneering barrister who successfully defended sex workers in court, so it seems fitting that she helped with "Circe". Joyce was grateful enough to put her in Ulysses as the 'wax model Raymonde I visited daily to admire her cobweb hose and stick of rhubarb toe, as worn in Paris.' Linossier was also the author of Bibi-la-Bibiste (1918), possibly the shortest novel in literature (30 lines) proclaimed by Ezra Pound to be a major work. Marcel Willard (1889-1956) was a barrister and a writer associated with the surrealists. His presentation inscription captures Linossier's devotion to arts and culture, work as a barrister, and passion for the study of Buddhist archaeology : 'A Raymonde Linossier, à la très moderne zélatrice de Sarazvati, au svaya (!) des Pas-Perdus.
