Important biography of Captain William Jesse McDonald, who turned from business to working as a peace officer to in the 1880's, serving as a deputy sheriff, special ranger and U.S. deputy marshal before being chosen to serve as a Captain in the Texas Rangers. According to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, McDonald took part in many of the most celebrated cases of the time, including Fitzsimmons-Maher prize fight, the Wichita Falls bank robbery, the Reese-Townsend feud, and the Brownsville Raid of 1906. He is considered one of the big four Captains of the period. Later he served as bodyguard to Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Basic Texas Books 158: "This is the life of the most famous Texas Ranger of the time, the man who it was said would 'charge hell with a bucket of water.' An attractive Volumes I and II of Beau Brummell, the complete version of Captain Jesse's popular biography, within the Beaux and Belles of England series from the Grolier Society. Undated, but believed to have been published in circa. 1910, with the first edition being published in 1844. The de luxe edition, with this copy being no.361 of one thousand. In three-quarter contemporary red crushed morocco with blue marble boards. Contains blue marble end papers, with contemporary blanks preserved. Each volume contains a colour frontispiece, and all five other monochrome plates. Collated complete. The Grolier Society, founded by editor Walter M. Jackson, was designed as a fine publishers of educational works, with this Beaux and Belles series focusing on celebrity men and women from history. Beau Brummell was considered among the most significant celebrities of his day, being both a Regency fashion icon and a prolific socialites friends with George IV when Prince Regent. Captain Jesse's biography popularised Brummelmania in Britain, of which when this Grolier edition was published would have been in its twilight years. In three-quarter contemporary red crushed morocco with blue marble boards. Blue marble end papers, with contemporary blanks preserved. Externally, smart, with a couple of faint marks to crushed morocco front joint, and minor fading to spines. A small lift to morocco to center of I spine. Blue marble end papers are bright and clean.
