Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. University Press of Kansas, Lawrence, KS. 2015. Hardcover. First Printing by Line Number. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for a gift notice and date on the FFFP. Book Condition: Good +; splash stain to fore edge textblock with light stiffening to the last 100 pages; no stuck or unreadable pages; else fine. DJ: Very Good+; small stain to bottom or rear panel; light edge bumping. Khaki cloth boards and spine with bright black lettering on the spine. 525 pp 8vo. Nearing 60, the author sat down to write his memoir of frontier life. His early years on the plains of western Kansas were both ordinary and extraordinary; ordinary in what they reveal about the everyday life of so many who went out to the western frontier, extraordinary in their breadth and depth of historical event and impact. His tales of life as a teamster, cavalryman, town developer, trapper, buffalo hunter, military scout, and cowboy put us squarely in the middle of such storied events as Sheridan's 1868-1869 winter campaign on the southern Plains and the Cheyenne Exodus of 1878. They take us trapping beaver and hunting buffalo for hides and meat, and driving cattle on the Great Western Cattle Trail. They give us insight into his evolving understanding of his multi-decade relationship with the Lakota. And they give us a front-row seat at the founding and development of Jewell and Gaylord, Kansas, and a firsthand look at the formation of Jewell's "Buffalo Militia." In later life he rose to prominence as a newspaper publisher, state legislator, and regent of the Kansas State Agricultural College. At the time of his death—noted in the New York Times—he was still at work on his memoir. Handed down through his family over the past century and faithfully transcribed here, Street's story of frontier life is as rich in history as it is in character, giving us a sense of what it was to be not just a witness to, but a player in, the drama of the plains as it unfolded in the late nineteenth century. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. Original publisher's medium green cloth binding with white lettering on front cover. No lettering on spine. 5" x 7 1/2." 220 pages, complete. Preface, Introduction, and Note in front. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning throughout and occasional smudges, stains, and spots of discoloration (most of the smudging and staining is on the front and back endpapers and first and last few pages). Covers are very clean and intact except for rubbing to lettering on front, moderate wear and slight bumping to corners, a few tiny marks, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. Collected extracts from a diary written by William Stockton Heacock (1876-1898). His entries were compiled by and are interspersed with narrative commentary by his parents and sister. His entries vary in length from about a sentence or two to several paragraphs. Heacock was born in Stockton, California. His parents and sister note in the Preface how his life was characterized by much hardship but also by his enduring Christian faith. They bring attention to how he kept the faith until the very end and hope that this work gives religious inspiration to those who read it. Beginning at the age of 17, Heacock was diagnosed with a serious illness. Much of his diary recollects his battle with this illness but also his ever-present Christian faith and dedication to Christian studies and worship. The diary also documents his frequent travels in search of a healthful environment that could better cater to his medical needs. As was frequently prescribed by physicians in his time, Heacock was encouraged to live in hotter, desert climes of the United States that were believed to be better for one's health. Among the many places Heacock visits are Las Vegas, Nevada; Phoenix, Arizona; Las Cruces, New Mexico; Yuma, AZ; Albuquerque, NM; Redlands, California; and Palm Springs, CA. Toward the end of his days, Heacock returned to Santa Clara, CA where he passed away at his parents' home. The commentary highlights how even in his final hours, Heacock expressed mental acuity and resolute faith in Christ.…
