Red cloth covered boards with black titles and border and vignette illustration to the front cover, black titles and vignette of a plane on the spine, with the dust jacket with colour illustrations to the front panel and the spine. With a colour frontispiece illustration of "The Scarlet Eagle" and another plane. Book condition good, corners rubbed and bumped, cloth a little faded, lower edge and head and tail of spine rubbed and a little faded, front paste-down a little wrinkled, a few spots to end-papers, pages are toned otherwise clean, no inscriptions. Dust jacket condition good, a lot of creasing along the top edge with a few nicks and chips, 1x1cm tear with loss at top of spine, closed tear without loss to top edge of spine, chipping to lower edge of spine and front panel, creasing to lower edge of rear panel, dust darkened, price corners has been clipped but I think by the publisher as there is a sticker just above that showing the price 4'- net.

On 8 x 11 cm piece of card. In fair condition, lightly aged, with traces of glue from mount on reverse. A good bold signature, clearly in response to a request for an autograph. Reads: 'Yours Truly | Willie Smith | 1 2 24'. Smith has made a short line under the date, but the signature is not underlined.

Quarter Leather. Condition: Near fine. The Second Edition of A Voyage Round the World, In The Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV by George Anson, published in 1748. (illustrator). Second Edition. Octavo, [24], 548pp. Quarter maroon morocco, marbled boards, title in gilt with raised bands. New endpapers. Occasional toning to leaves, free of notable wear or foxing. Complete with three fold-out charts of the Voyage of the Centurion, all in fine condition. (Sabin 1626) This work is the second edition, after the first Quarto edition, published the same year. Voyage Round the World recounts Commodore George Anson's circumnavigation of the world between 1740-1744. At the time, Britain was at war with Spain. Anson's mission was to disrupt Spanish trading routes in the Pacific, but his fleet was nearly destroyed during the voyage around Cape Horn. After repairing his fleet and procuring new crew members, he was successful in capturing a Spanish Galleon near Manila. There was a tremendous loss of life on the voyage, with only 188 of the original 1,854 surviving the journey. (Sabin 1625).

Modern full brown morocco, new endpapers, title in gilt on spine, raised bands, Folio measures (15.5" x 10"). Housed in slipcase, paste on marbled boards, solid hinges. Frontispiece portrait of Captain Cook, engraved by "Mr. Thornton," dated Feb. 14, 1779. This work is complete with 157 illustrated copper plate engravings (41 Maps/Elevations, 109 Illustrations), including large fold-out map and the plate depicting the "Death of Captain Cook." Plates in near fine condition, with only occasional toning. Archival tissue repair through "Directions to Bookbinder" leaf, now stable. Includes directions to bookbinder and 2-page list of subscribers. (Beddie, 19) From Forbes, this work is State IV of the first edition, with the publisher's imprint lacking reference to "booksellers and News Carriers," and is not dated. (Forbes 61) (Howgego I, C176). This important work is a compilation of Captain Cook's three voyages. It also includes voyages by Carteret, Anson, Drake and others. An attractive copy of this rare folio.
