An invaluable, comprehensive and minutely detailed guide to the history and architecture of London, the Encyclopaedia has never been out of print. Benjamin Weinreb (1912-99), was a British bookseller and expert on the history of London. He developed a specialism in books about architecture about which his catalogues became important references in themselves. Christopher Hibbert (1924-2008), was a historian and author. Hardcover. 108p., 7.25x10.25 inches, poetry, art, fiction, criticism, two color tipped-in plates, one folding plate, b&w plates and facsimiles, very good arts and literary journal which appears to have been specially bound in hardcover cloth decorated with an abstract painting and with paper title labels on front cover and spine (which has been chipped). Images and descriptions found indicate all 9 issues were wraps bound magazines illustrated on covers with images from John Stephan's painting. This may have been an amateur binder's project to rebind the magazine.

Condition: Fine. Thomas Wyck (Wijck) (illustrator). This important etching was published as part of John McCreery's "A Collection of Original Etchings". It was published in London by McCreery in 1816. Each etching was pasted to backing paper. The original copper plates were believed to be destroyed after this publication. --- Most of the etchings are printed from the original plates of the artist. It features original plate etchings from the artists: Corenlius Bega (1654), Claude Lorraine (1660), Dominique Barriere (and Lorraine) (1651), Horizonti, Hollar (1641-1647), Theodore Van Kessel (1654), Peter de Laer (1636), Rembrandt, some after Rembrandt by Vivares, Van Vliet (1632), Thomas Wyck (1670), and Ruysdael (1668). The work also featured etchings after the artwork of Rembrant, Ruysdael, Du Jardin, Della Bella, and more. --- The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. Wyck fec", auf Bütten. 18:19 cm - Verso an den Ecken Reste alter Verklebung, Löchlein restauriert, 2 Nadellöchlein, leichte Knickfalten in den oberen Ecken. Provenienz: Sammlung BJ (ligiert). Vergleichsliteratur: Niederländische Zeichnungen des 16. bis 18.Jahrhunderts. Hrsg.v.Lisa Oehler. Kassel, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, 1979, Nrn. 84 u. 85 mit Abb. Wyck reiste vor 1640 nach Italien; seitdem überwiegen in seinen Landschaftszeichnungen mit Architektur diejenigen mit italienischem Charakter. Italienische Häuser, Innenhöfe, römische Gebäude und Ruinen sind erfüllt von südlichem Licht, das Wyck mit schwarzer Kreide und Lavierung, im vorliegenden Blatt mit grauer Tusche, vortrefflich wiedergeben kann. Sein zeichnerisches Oeuvre ist verhältnismäßig groß und so ist er in vielen öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten.
