Folio. 14 x 15.5 inches. 48 original mounted professional photographs, each a full-page image. Modern half red morocco, cloth. A piece of the original cloth cover, with the title in German as shown, is mounted within the volume. Fine. 48 fine vintage photographs, 23 of which are signed by the photograph (19 by the Zangaki Brothers; 4 by Antoine Beoto). The images are taken in the southern Egyptian Luxor region, including images of the Valley of the Kings at Luxor temple, the Nile, Karnak temple, and Thebes. / The first photograph shows the Sphynx and in front are a couple (presumedly a husband & wife, perhaps German or Swiss-German), obviously tourists. This is their memory album of a visit to Luxor in southern Egypt, the place of the Valley of the Kings. The photographs, some of which are titled, are chiefly titled in French. Even though 23 of the photographs are signed, it is clear that the whole album is made up of images from these two photographers, meaning that 47 of the images should be either by the Zangaki Brothers or Antoine Beoto's studio. The only unique image should be the first one showing the two travelers and their guides.

A large German album with 34 albumen prints of Egypt. The Greek brothers G. and C. Zangaki were photographers who worked in Egypt in the second half of the 19th century. Due to increased tourism to this region after the opening of the Suez Canal, there was a large demand for souvenir photographs. Photographers like the Zangaki brothers, as well as Sebah & Joallier, catered to this. The Zangakis were among the first commercial photographers to produce large-scale images of Egypt. They travelled through the country with a portable darkroom to capture high-quality images of famous monuments and daily life, though the latter were usually posed. These images were then printed and sold to tourists, either separately or compiled into albums. According to John Hannavy, the brothers "produced some of the finest images of late Victorian Egypt". The 34 photographs include: the great pyramid, Cairo and the Nile, dervishes and other exotic looking locals, Egyptians standing on top of the sphinx, obeliscs, the Ramesseum, Karnak temple, the temple of Dendera, the Great Pyramid, Egyptians climbing the pyramid, the mosque and tomb of Muhammad Ali, Saqqara and many others. With two small library stamps on the first page, not affecting the photograph. The book has been rebacked. The left side of the front board has faded and the corners are worn. Minor browning around the edges of the leaves. Back flyleaf loose. The photos are crisp and clear and the book is otherwise in good condition.l Erdem, Views of Egypt by Georgios and Constantinos Zangaki: Examining a late nineteenth-century photographic album at the Art Gallery of Ontario (thesis), 2006; Hannavy, Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography, pp. 1036, 1093 & 1521. Original gold-stamped bubble-grained maroon cloth over boards, modern maroon cloth spine and leather corners. Gold stamped title and year on the front, white watered silk endpapers. With 34 large albumen prints mounted on heavy cardstock leaves. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned in French in the negative and signed 'Zangaki'. The last one is signed Sebah & Joallier. The Zangaki prints measure 22.5 x 28.5 cm; the Sebah & Joallier one is 20.5 x 26.5 cm. Pages: [36] ll.

Remarkable collecton of photographs about Egypt, and in particular about the Egyptian oil industry. The first 17 photographs in the album date from the 1870s and 1880s, and were made by the famous Zangaki brothers, who were among the first commercial photograhers working in Egypt. The beautiful prints in the album show views of Caïro, pyramids, and locals, which are the type of scenes the Zangaki's specialised in. The remaining photographs date from the 1910s and offer a unique view of the very beginnings of the Egyptian oil industry. They document the building of an oil refinery and storage, presumably near Ras Gemsah, where Egypt first began drilling for oil. An especially notable addition to the collection are the two folding panorama photographs, which give a good sense of the scale of these building projects. As we have not been able to find these photographs anywhere else, they may have been privately commisioned by the Egyptian oil industry and only given to those involved in it.The Anglo-Egyptian Oilfields Limited registered in London on 6 July 1911. The company was a joint operation of Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum with the objective of receiving concessions, developing, drilling, purifying, supplying, reserving, distributing and handling petroleum products.Ras Gemsah became a very important source of oil, and in 1911, the first oil refinery was established there, which is what the present photographs show. The refinery's first operations commenced in 1912 and it was considered the only origin for oil production for quite some time. On one of the photographs, the English, Egyptian and Dutch flags can be seen side by side. Since the album was bound by R. W. Rinck of the Hof- en Nederlandsche albumfabriek en hofboekbinderij, which was a prestigious bindery at the time, it may have been meant for an important Shell employee involved in the Ras Gemsah project. With the label of the bookbinder (R.W. Rinck, Den Haag) at the foot of the front pastedown. The corners and edges of the boards are somewhat scuffed. The edges of the leaves are discoloured, without affecting the photographs. Otherwise in good condition. Contemporary embossed brown cloth (made to imitate reptile skin), with the title blind-tooled on the front board, decorative paper endpapers. With 83 albumen prints, of which 2 folding panorama photographs, 17 signed and numbered in the negative by the Zangaki brothers, and 66 larger prints of the oil industry. Pages: [42], [8 blank] ll.

Oblong folio (425 x 330 mm). 102 albumen photographs (220 x 275 mm) mounted on card. Contemporary green pebbled cloth ruled in blind. A large collection of portraits and views of Jerusalem and surroundings, most signed or captioned in-plate by Felix Bonfils (46), the American Colony studio (16), Zangaki (7), Dumas, and P. Sebah. Striking scenes include sea-bathers in the Dead Sea, the market at Jaffa overflowing with melons, the Greek Orthodox ceremony of the washing of the feet in the courtyard of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, several scenes of the interior of the same church, the Tombs of the Kings, the convent of Mar Sabba clinging to a cliffside, the Christmas Day pilgrimage in Bethlehem, the Valley of Jehoshaphat, street scenes of Jerusalem populated by passersby in Ottoman and European dress, men and camels resting along the banks of the Jordan or aiming their rifles across the river for the camera, the "Mosque of Omar" (Dome of the Rock, Qubbat as-Sakhra) and the interior of the Al-Aqsa Mosque (also known as the Qibli Mosque). The collection also includes portraits, largely of locals: two portraits of women from Nazareth, all in European style dresses under long headscarves, two wearing tall pattens to keep their feet from the street mud; father and son street vendors in Ottoman dress, a young woman from Bethlehem in an elaborately embroidered jacket, and a bearded man captioned "Cheik de Village". - Some fading and occasional wear to photographs, binding skilfully rebacked and repaired. An interesting and wide-ranging collection documenting Jerusalem from the individual to the historical scale just prior to the turn of the century.

Interesting photo album, probably compiled as a souvenir of a journey through the Holy Land, Egypt, Athens and Venice in the 1890s. Complete souvenir albums were sold by photographer's studios and dealers alike. However, the fact that the current album has several blank pages at the end, lacks a binding title and contains photographs showing several different countries, suggests that it was compiled by an individual traveller. Among the photographs of Athens, is an image of the statue of Themis, excavated in 1890 in Rhamnous and subsequently transported to Athens. The inclusion of this photograph suggests the album was compiled in or soon after 1890.The largest part of the album contains photographs of Egypt and Jerusalem. After a view with numerous watermelons at the market of Jaffa, it shows views of Ramlah, Bethany (al-Azariya), Khan al-Ahmar ("scene of the 'good Samaritan' episode") and the convent Mar Saba. Before the views of Bethlehem on Christmas day, are two photographs showing local inhabitants: a single rider with his horse before the river Jordan and a Bedouin camp near Jericho. All the major sites of Jerusalem are present, including the Mount of Olives, Wailing Wall, Solomon's Stables and the Jaffa Gate with more watermelons. A misplaced image of the coppersmiths of Cairo appears before images of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The images of Egypt mostly show the river Nile and the Pyramids, but also a busy market in the garden of Gezireh, the interior of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali and a mummy. Typical images of Athens and Venice follow, with the final image showing a gentleman and two ladies feeding the pigeons on the Piazza San Marco. With the captions of several of the photographs transcribed in pencil or ink. Binding worn at the extremities. Paperboard album leaves with a few spots and several tears, most of the header corners damaged and several repaired. Photographs in excellent condition, a few with some spots and light damage at the sides. Contemporary brown half morocco, buckram boards. Oblong album (41.5 x 31 cm) containing 62 albumen prints, mostly 23 x 28 cm, with 2 smaller prints of ca. 16 x 28 and 5 large prints of 35.5 x 27 cm. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned on the negative in French, and sometimes also in English. Pages: [59], [11 blank] pp.

Original albumen print (27 x 21 cm) of the Mosque of Sultan Hassan in Cairo. Image gently faded; some light spotting. Generally very good. The two Adelphoi Zangaki or Zangaki Brothers were Greek photographers active in Egypt in the latter half of the nineteenth century, selling photographs of the country's great sights and structures as souvenirs to tourists. They are individually known only as C. and G. Zangaki. Anything pertaining to their birth, upbringing, lives, and the particulars of their work is unclear. They do emerge, however, in legal proceedings brought against them by French photographer Hippolyte Arnoux in which they were convicted of stealing Arnoux's intellectual property. Whilst the Zangaki brothers' identities have drifted into obscurity, their photographs remain and are often considered amongst the finest taken of nineteenth century Egypt. No. 760.

Sin Encuadernar. Condition: Muy bien. Hermanos Zangaki.
