A reprint of the original 1928 edition, with additions."Up until 1961, this completely ficticious account of Alger's life was the only biography of Alger ever written. The book recounts a version of Alger's life based on a diary and letters that never existed. For nearly forty years, this biography was accepted as definitive and accurate, and even today it is still mistakenly cited as a reliable source in most reference texts. In the author's own words, this version of Alger's life, 'literally swarms with countless absurdities.'" - The Horatio Alger Society, online.

My father ran the Presbyterian Mission hospital --one of only three doctors in the whole peninsula. Mother had gone to Siam in 1903, three years after she graduated from high school, to work in a missionary girls' school. Through the next 31 years and the reigns of five Siamese kings Siam was her home. She married Father in 1910. They had 11 children - I was number six - and Siam was our home." [from the Preface]. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Jacket by Jupper Peep (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. SIGNED AND INSCRIBD BY THE AUTHOR, IN BLACK INK, ON FFEP 'Andrea With best wishes from Tony Haig-Thomas, Old Warden 2.IX.10.' Some minuscule edge wear to top of jacket and spine, corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (price on back jacket £16.00), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks hardly read. 173pp, illustrated. Tony Haig-Thomas tells his highly personal story of a young man in hog heaven (well, most of the time) but also painting an affectionate and authentic picture of that Air Force that he loved so much. Some of his descriptions of flying are lyrical. Passages on operational flying in Venoms and Hunters out of Aden (and ground operations with the Army) are exciting and play down the gallantry involved. If you know what it was like to be in the Royal Air Force in the late 50s and early 60s, then you must wallow in the nostalgia generated by Tony's story. If you would like to know what the Air Force was like in those days, then read this book, because it is the real thing. If you are just curious to know more about Tony, then much will be revealed by this book. Tony Haig-Thomas was one of the trustees of the Shuttleworth aircraft museum at Old Warden in Beds, where he evidently signed this book. Signed by Author(s).
