--- "Fabulae centum ex antiquis auctoribus delectae et a Gabriele Faerno Cremonensi carminibus explica tae." --- Mit insgesamt 101 Radierungen (Titel + eine Radierung pro Fabel). Zweiter Druck der ersten Ausgabe. Rom, Vincentius Luchinus 1564 Halblederband (22 x 16 x 2 cm) des 18. Jahrhunderts, mit Rückenschild. --- (7 S.), 100 Blatt. --- Zustand: Einband berieben, Seiten etwas fleckig, mit zwei alten Besitzeinträgen und einem alten Stempel. Guter Zustand! The humanist scholar Gabriele Faerno, also known by his Latin name of Faernus Cremonensis, was born in Cremona about 1510 and died in Rome on 17 November 1561. He was a scrupulous textual editor and an elegant Latin poet who is best known now for his collection of Aesop's Fables in Latin verse. Poetry: Faerno is counted one of the foremost of the Renaissance Latin poets, largely on account of his "100 Fables" (Centum Fabulae ex antiquis autoribus delectae, et carminibus explicatae). Though not published until 1563, there is evidence that the work was completed as early as 1558. So excellent were his versions that one scholar went so far as to accuse him of concealing an undiscovered manuscript of Phaedrus for fear of lessening the value of his own versions. But Charles Perrault, who published a translation of Faerno's work into French verse (Paris 1699), defended the author from this imputation in his preface. Pope Pius IV, convinced that reading the fables of Aesop was of great use in forming the morals of young children, commissioned Gabriel Faerno, whom he knew as an excellent poet as well as a man with a taste for elegant and beautiful Latinity, to versify these fables so that children might learn, at the same time and from the same book, both moral and linguistic purity.Faerno has been called a second Phaedrus, by reason of the excellent style of his Fables, though he never saw Phaedrus, who did not come to our knowledge till above thirty years after his death; for Pithoeus, having found that manuscript in the dust of an old library, published it in the beginning of this century. Thuanus, who makes very honourable mention of our author in his history, pretends that Phaedrus was not unknown to him; and even blames him for having suppressed that author, to conceal what he had stolen from him. But there is no ground for what he says; and it is only the effect of the strong persuasion of all those who are so great admirers of antiquity as to think that a modern author can do nothing that is excellent, unless he has an ancient author for his model. Out of the hundred fables which Faerno published in Latin verse, there are but five that had been treated by Phaedrus, and out of those five there are but one or two that have been managed nearly in the same manner: which happened only because it is impossible that two men, who treat on the same subject, should not agree sometimes in the same thoughts, or in the same expressions.".

[4], 100, 4to, contemporary Italian goatskin, elaborately gilt with strapwork and small floral and ornamental hand tools, including acorns and pomegranates, gilt and gauffered edges; sympathetically rebacked, very minor old worming to upper cover; bookplate of the German-Brazilian bibliophile and book collector, Herbert Eberhard Herring, very good. Scarce first edition of this cornerstone of the fable genre. One hundred fables, collected and translated by the humanist scholar Gabriele Faerno (1510-61). This compendium was commissioned by Pius IV, and published posthumously after editing by S. Antoniano. Most of the fables are from Aesop, some come from other classical sources, and a handful are contemporary, such as the Tale of the drowned Woman and her Husband, and The Miller, his Son and the Donkey. The work influenced Perrault and other fabulists. The origin of the numbered illustrations has been the subject of much speculation; for a time they were thought to be after designs by Raphael, and were later attributed to Titian. They are now believed to be the work of Faerno's friend and associate Pirro Ligorio. An old catalogue description, tipped in, laments the shaky execution of some of the etchings: 'It really is a pity, that the printer of the plates was not a better craftsman, as all copies of this book contain, like ours, bad or weak impressions together with fairly good or good ones. Of course the illustration of books with copperplate, which wanted an entirely new technique of printing, was not at all customary in this early period [.] It is not quite so surprising therefore, that these early attempts were not all successful.' Mortimer concurs: 'several of the plates having slipped in the press'. The illustrations are no less charming for their varying quality, and are very expressive. A very attractive copy, in a contemporary Italian binding, of this important work. Brunet, II, 1160 ; Harvard, Italian, 178 ; Praz, p. 57 ; Adams Cambridge, I, F 115. /// Rome, Vincenzo Luchino, 1563.Small 4to [213 x 156 mm.] of (4) ll. including the frontispiece, 100 ll. illustrated with 100 full-page etched engravings. Stiff ivory vellum, flat spine, olive morocco lettering piece, blue edges. Ancient Italian binding. --- Posthumous first edition of Faerne's Fables, published by Silvio Antoniano. Brunet, II, 1160; Harvard, Italian, 178; Praz, p. 57; Adams Cambridge, I, F 115. Pope Pius IV had commissioned Faerne, from Cremone, to choose a hundred of fables by Aesop and others. Faerne died in 1561 before finishing his work which was completed and edited in 1563. La Fontaine will go over some of these fables a century later: "The Earthen Pot and the Iron Pot", "The ass with a load of sponges and the ass with a load of salt", "The ant and the grasshopper", "The lark and her young ones", "The Fox and the grapes", "The Fox and the Crow". This beautiful edition is illustrated in very first state with the 100 beautiful full-page copper-engravings, after drawings attributed to Titian. Copies dated 1564 and even 1565 present these identical plates but bibliographers consider that only copies of 1563 present the particularity of the first state. Very expressive and marked by movement, these finely executed etchings are to be related to the woodcuts inspired also by Titian's drawings and which will illustrate in 1570 Verdizzoti's Fables. Very beautiful copy, extremely wide-margined (height 213 mm against 210 for the Harvard copy) of this "rare and unusual" (Brunet) first edition of a very beautiful Italian illustrated book of fables. It comes from the Paul Hart collection with ex-libris.
