Soft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Yes, there is a cure for the common cold. In this invaluable book, two natural health experts explain how a regimen of vitamin C, zinc, echinacea, and other supplements can stop most colds and flu before they even start -- and how other natural remedies can effectively relieve symptoms. Ray Sahelian, MD, obtained a BS in nutrition from Drexel University and completed his doctoral training at Thomas Jefferson Medical School, both in Philadelphia. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice. A popular and respected physician and medical writer, Sahelian is internationally recognized as a moderate voice in the evaluation of natural supplements. In his books, television appearances and writings, he discusses both the benefits and risks of these supplements. Victoria Dolby Toews, MPH writes evidence-based, integrative medicine articles that tap into her years of research and writing expertise, as well as being backed by her Masters of Public Health. She is the co-author of over a half-dozen books and has served as managing editor of Healthnotes Online. These copies are from a book store inventory, were purchased new from warehouse by them, but never individually owned. Copyright 1999. Full printline indicates from 1st printing, 1st edition. A lovely rebound first edition copy of Richard Tappin Claridge's best known and most widely cited publication, 'Hydropathy; or, The Cold Water Cure, As Practised by Vincent Priessnitz'. Whilst completing a successful career as a prominent asphalt contractor and captain in the Middlesex Militia, Claridge is best known today for his promotion of hydropathy (or hydrotherapy); a Cold Water cure that involves the use of water for pain relief and treatment. Claridge is widely credited with introducing the methods of the founder of modern hydrotherapy Vincent Priessnitz to England, and for initiating the populist movement of the time. Claridge was first introduced to hydropathy attending Priessnitz's establishment at Graefenberg in 1841. Crediting the methods Priessnitz had created for saving the life of his daughter, Claridge avidly began to promote the system, writing this work 'Hydropathy; or, The Cold Water Cure, As Practised by Vincent Priessnitz' in 1842. The text was largely formed from notes on his own experiences, observations of other patients' experiences, observations of the methods employed, and from his discussions with Priessnitz and other patients during his stay in Graefenberg. A scarce first edition copy, with a preface dated 21 January 1842, as called for. With a frontispiece plate depicting several stages of Priessnitz's Cold Water Cure. Rebound in a lovely quarter cloth binding, with a morocco label tipped to the spine and attractive marbled paper over boards. With publisher's advertisements to the front of the work dated 'January, 1842', and another to the rear of the work. Rebound in a lovely quarter cloth binding with marbled paper over boards. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear to extremities. Bookseller's label tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Faint tidemark to lower fore edge of frontispiece plate, not affecting image. Tear to page 1 of publisher's advertisements to front of work, repaired with tape to verso. Two vols bound in one, 8vo, pp.I: [1, blank], [5], iiixx, 172, II: [4], ii, [2], 134, [2]; with part-titles; a very good, partially unopened copy in dark green publisher's cloth, boards blocked in blind, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt; corners very lightly rubbed with two minor nicks to upper cover, spine very slightly sunned, endcaps bumped.First edition, scarce, of Edwin Lee's two-volume survey of palliative bathing spots in Germany, including an appendix on the 'Cold Water Cure', a combination of induced sweating and cold-water therapy 'of late very much in vogue' (appendix). Part travel guide, part medical survey, this volume describes natural springs in the Duchy of Nassau (volume one) and southern Germany (volume two), detailing each spring's environs, its chemical composition, and the ailments best targeted by its waters and accommodation available to travellers. Edwin Lee (d.1870) became interested in spa treatment whilst training in medicine in Berlin and Munich and sought 'to call the attention of the profession to such points of continental practice in medicine and surgery, as were but little known, and which I considered might be advantageously adopted in England' (p.iv). Following the loss of a heated contest for the position of assistant surgeon at St George's Hospital, London in 1843, Lee became critical of the electoral procedure which governed medical organisation in England. He saw an 'increasing deterioration of the profession' (Additional Notes, p.39). A vocal supporter of medical reform, Lee published Remarks upon medical Organisation and Reform in 1846 and subsequently served as a witness to the 1848 select committee for medical registration and medical law amendment (1848), vocalising the struggles of medical professionals excluded from the London hospitals. Lee wrote further on medical topics such as sleepwalking and stammering, as well as Bradshaw's Companion to the Continent (1851), which 'bridged the gap between the grand tour by carriage and the package tour by Thomas Cook'. See Lee, Additional Notes corroborative of the remarks in the 'St George's Hospital Medical Staff' (1860). Language: English.
