No binding. Typed letter to the mother of Paul de Forges hand signed by Arnaud de Pontac. From the archives of french aviation pioneer Arnaud de Pontac. En janvier 1935, le colonel Weiss présente à Paul de Forges le célèbre pilote Maurice Finat, ancien de la Grande Guerre, déjà détenteur de plusieurs records. Les deux aviateurs décident de battre le record de vitesse sur la liaison Paris - Madagascar. Le 19 mars 1935 à 12 h 15, à bord du Farman 359 immatriculé F-ALMK , Paul de Forges et Maurice Finat décollent de Marseille-Marignane en direction de Tunis. Dans la nuit du 22 mars, les deux aviateurs sont confrontés à un orage d'une telle violence qu'ils sont dans l'obligation de rebrousser chemin et de revenir au terrain de Malakal (Soudan). La tentative de record Paris - Madagascar est un échec, mais les deux pilotes décident de poursuivre quand même leur raid jusqu'à leur destination finale. Le 3 avril à midi, Paul de Forges et Maurice Finat se posent sur le terrain d'Ivato-Tananarive. Pour le retour en France, Paul de Forges et Maurice Finat quittent Tananarive le 19 avril. Le lendemain 20 avril, peu après le décollage de Moshi au Tanganyika, par très mauvais temps, le Farman qui vole à basse altitude est brusquement rabattu vers le sol par un violent courant descendant et s'écrase dans la forêt vierge. Maurice Finat est tué sur le coup. Paul de Forges est grièvement blessé1. Quand il revient à lui, il voit sortir un os de la jambe gauche de son pantalon et son pied pendre en-dessous, presque arraché. L'os de son bras gauche également cassé sort de son poignet. Paul de Forges est secouru par des indigènes et un missionnaire protestant, le Révérend Becker, qui lui donne les premiers soins. Il est ensuite transporté à l'hôpital européen de Moshi pour être opéré. Un chirurgien anglais, le docteur Sanderson, décide de surseoir à l'amputation de la jambe gauche et réussit une opération des plus délicates. Pendant plusieurs jours les médecins croient Paul de Forges perdu. Au bout de quinze jours ils peuvent l'assurer qu'il gardera sa jambe. Après six semaines, il quitte l'hôpital de Moshi pour Mombasa. Désormais, il marchera en permanence avec une canne. Le 14 juin 1935, en compagnie de sa mère venue le rejoindre par avion, Paul de Forges embarque à Mombasa à bord du Bernardin de Saint-Pierre , à destination de la France. Convalescent, Paul de Forges se rétablit auprès de sa mère, au château familial de La Bousselaie, en Rieux. Il profite de ce repos forcé pour relater l'extraordinaire odyssée de son raid. Quinze années de succès récompensèrent mes constants efforts ; cinq années consécutives de revers m'ont enlevé position, enfants, frère, amis, fortune, j'ai tout perdu ! Le courage, l'amour du travail restent sans emploi. [.] Il ne me reste d'autre parti à prendre que de retourner à Issy (Seine), mon domicile habituel, avec ma malheureuse épouse, affaiblie par les souffrances et le chagrin. Cette femme, née à la Guadeloupe d'une famille distinguée de l'île, habituée aux douceurs que procure une haute aisance, n'a plus que sa grande piété, sa résignation, son dévouement pour lui faire supporter des fatigues et des privations qu'elle ne devait jamais connaître, et que je ne puis lui épargner. » On joint : Le Breton-Des-Forges, Théorie pratique des engrais, Nancy, Imprimerie Hinzelin et Cie, s.d. Les délais demandés par le ministère de la Marine ne permettent pas leur fabrication. «Le ministre a trop restreint le tems qu'il vous accordait pour cette fabrication, il a du s'en convaincre lorsque je lui ai mandé que les forges impériales ne pourraient fournir les objets demandés en moins de deux mois». Il lui adresse la copie de la réponse du ministre. «Vous y verrez que les besoins du port de Cherbourg sont tellement urgents que Monseigneur veut que nous travaillons concurrement pour y pourvoir sous le plus court délai. La saison n'est point favorable, nous manquons d'eau ; cependant, j'ai tout lieu d'espérer qu'en rassemblant tous mes moyens, je pourrai fournir vers la fin d'août ou dans les premiers jours de septembre : 6 grosses enclûmes à table unie du poids de 200 kilog. 2 grandes bigornes du poids de 300 K. [.]». Il demande à son correspondant de se charger du reste de la commande, à savoir : 5 grosses enclumes de 200 kg, 12 étaux à froid de 72 kg. «Ce qu'il y a de certain c'est que dans le courant d'un mois, délai accordé par le ministre, je ne pourrai fabriquer que les quantités détaillées plus haut. Je vous invite donc pour le plus grand intérêt du service de Sa Majesté, à user de tous vos moyens pour pourvoir au reste».
