Illustrated from nature by Tuffen West. A new edition. xx, 106pp., half-title., frontispiece, 7 plates, and 15 figures in the text. A good copy in original blind stamped and gilt lettered pebble-grain cloth. Expertly rebacked retaining the original spine. This edition contains the 'preface to the third edition.' small 8vo. Robert Hardwicke. c1873. ~ The public health reformer, natural historian, lecturer and skilled microscopist Edwin Lankester (1814-1874) first published his Half-hours with the Microscope in 1859. This immensely popular book went through numerous editions and was still published decades after the author's death. Described as 'a popular guide', the book was framed as a series of half-hour adventures with the microscope in the home, garden and further afield, and points to the developing role of the microscope within the family home and life in the 19th century. It was illustrated 'from nature' by Tuffen West, one of the most skilled and prolific illustrators of microscopical observations of the period. The idea of the microscope as 'a means of amusement and instruction', appearing here in the sub-title, was expressed in much of the literature on microscopy produced at this time.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. HALF-HOURS WITH THE MICROSCOPE BY EDWIN LANKESTER 1874 ILLUSTRATED. If you look up this book, the description suggests a very popular book of its times, but surprisingly, I could not find an American edition online (only print-on-demand). Please find: Half-Hours with the Microscope, Being a Popular Guide to the Use of the Microscope as a Means of Amusement and Instruction by Edwin Lankester. This small hard cover book (5 x 7 ½ inches, 130 pages plus 2 pages of publisher s adverts, a paste-down advert for a Microscope, and a laid-in 4 page Condensed Price-List of Scientific Instruments from James W. Queen & Co. ) was published by G.P. Putnam s Sons of New York, dated 1874. The book is bound in burnt orange boards with black framing and titles on cover and spine. According to the title page, the book is illustrated from nature by Tuffen West and this is a New Edition with Chapter on the Polariscope by F. Kitton. The Frontispiece is a tissue-guarded color plate. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The front board is a bit concave, probably from exposure to water and there are some streaks across the finish and a tiny tear in the top of the gutter. The boards are bumped and dust-dulled but nothing severe. Inside, the book is unmarked but there is some water effect to the front endpapers and some foxing to the rear endpapers too. Fortunately, the interior pages are generally clean and bright and without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
