INSCRIBED by the AUTHOR: "Cordialmente" and signed with just his initials. Good+ condition. NOT a library discard. Pages are clean and unmarked. Coleccion de tesis doctorales. This volume…was among several dozen books from Alonzo Church's library that we were lucky enough to purchase at auction in New Jersey. Several of the books contain his signature, or a presentation inscription to him. Unfortunately, this volume does not have those signs of his ownership. [But please check our inventory for several others that do]. Alonzo Church (1903 - 1995) was professor of mathematics at Princeton University (1929-1967) and of mathematics and philosophy at UCLA (1967-1990). He was the founding editor of the JOURNAL OF SYMBOLIC LOGIC. Among his most influential contributions are Church's Theorem, Church's Thesis, and the Lambda Calculus. His work was of major importance in mathematical logic, recursion theory, theoretical computer science, and functional programming languages in general. Professor Church's creation of lambda calculus was the foundation for the LISP programming language and provided the semantic model for ALGOL. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, British Academy, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Church is regarded by many as the greatest American logician of the 20th century. [For more on Church's contributions, see items 250, 251, 321, 394, and 533 in Hook and Norman's ORIGINS OF CYBERSPACE, A LIBRARY ON THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING.]. First Edition. Softcover. Add to basketStuttgart, (1956). 8vo. Orig. fulll brown cloth w. gilt lettering to spine and front board" original red dust-jacket w. a bit of sunning to spine, otherwise near perfect condition. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy. 251, (1) pp. First edition, presentation-copy, of one of Adorno's most interesting and important works. With a fi…ve lines long presentation-inscription signed "Th. W. Adorno", dated "Frankfurt, 16. November 1956."Most of text was written between 1934 and 1937, when Adorno was not allowed to teach in Frankfurt, but parts of the book were written shortly before the first printing of the book, in 1956. The important and influential German philosopher and sociologist, Theodor Ludwig Wiesengrund Adorno (1903 - 1969), was a leading member of the Frankfurt School, together with e.g. Horkheimer, Benjamin, and Habermas. He taught philosophy at the university of Frankfurt, but as a Jew, his teaching position was taken from him in 1933. He went to Oxford to teach, and in 1938 he emigrated to America, where he was the leader of several sociological projects in both New York and Los Angeles. Together with Horkheimer he wrote the theoretical manifest of the Frankfurt School, the "Dialektik der Aufklärung". I 1949 he returned to Frankfurt, where he became professor of philosophy and sociology. "Theodor W. Adorno was one of the most important philosophers and social critics in Germany after World War II. Although less well known among anglophone philosophers than his contemporary Hans-Georg Gadamer, Adorno had even greater influence on scholars and intellectuals in postwar Germany. In the 1960s he was the most prominent challenger to both Sir Karl Popper's philosophy of science and Martin Heidegger's philosophy of existence. Jürgen Habermas, Germany's foremost social philosopher after 1970, was Adorno's student and assistant. The scope of Adorno's influence stems from the interdisciplinary character of his research and of the Frankfurt School to which he belonged. It also stems from the thoroughness with which he examined Western philosophical traditions, especially from Kant onward, and the radicalness to his critique of contemporary Western society. He was a seminal social philosopher and a leading member of the first generation of Critical Theory." (SEP).In this anti-epistemological work, Adorno deals with the more general question of the possibility of truth and of epistemology in principle ("die Frage nach Möglichkeit und Wahrheit von Erkenntnistheorie prinzipiell", Vorrede, p. 9), although the outer structure of the work is that of the philosophy of Husserl. Adorno comes to the conclusion that all epistemology is misguided, because it is based on some sort of "prima philosophia", an original or first principle, which cannot in reality be an absolutely first, because it is a concept, which is mediated. Adorno's work became hugely influential throughout philosophical and sociological circles, and his "Zur Metakritik der Erkenntnistheorie" (translated as "Against Epistemology") counts as one of his most important works. "It inspired Habermas and Marcuse and continues to influence other eminent thinkers in philosophy and the social sciences today." (From the English language translation by Willis Domingo).

Add to basketHalle, 1930. 4to. Unbound, as issued, with the original paper backstrip. Spine a little loose. A very fine copy with only minor soiling. VI, 71 (also numbered (239)-309) pp. + 1 f. ("Lebenslauf"). Scarce first edition, offprint, with a 3-line presentation-inscription from Husserl (Signed "Ihr/ E Husserl") of Fink's inaugural pri…ce-dissertation, which also appeared in Husserl's "Jahrbuch für Philosophie und Phänomenologische Forschung" - there under the title "Vergegenwärtigung und Bild". This notorious dissertation was officially defended in front of Husserl and Heidegger and caused Fink to be chosen as Husserl's assistant. The present copy encapsules one of the most important periods in the history of phenomenology - the 1930'ies is a period of turmoil in the great phenomenologists life, a period in which Husserl transforms many of his basic ideas, and Fink, Husserl's assistant and the person closest to observing this transformation, is the primary witness to this historical change. "In the last decade of his life (from 1928 to 1938), Husserl sought to develop a new understanding of his transcendental phenomenology (in publications such as "Cartesian Meditations", "Formal and Transcendental Logic", and the "Crisis") in order to combat misconceptions of phenomenology then current (chief among which was Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology as articulated in "Being and Time"). During this period, Husserl had an assistant and collaborator, Eugen Fink, who sought not only to be midwife to the birth of Husserl's own ideas but who also wanted to mediate between Husserl and Heidegger. As a result of the Fink-Husserl collaboration there appeared a rich flow of works that testify to the depth with which transcendental phenomenology had been rethought." (Dermot Moran, Fink's Speculative Phenomenology: Between Constitution and Transcendence). The important German philosopher Eugen Fink initially studied under Husserl in Freiburg, before he famously became his assistant. He counts as one of the most important representatives of phenomenological idealism and is famous for his definition of philosophical problems as "pre-questions" that lead, through ontological practice, to true philosophy. "Eugen Fink was Edmund Husserl's research assistant during the last decade of the renowned phenomenologist's life, a period in which Husserl's philosophical ideas were radically recast." (R. Bruzina, Edmund Husserl and Eugen Fink. Beginnings and Ends in Phenomenology, 1928-1938).
