This is an original pen and ink cartoon by the artist Arthur Moreland (1867-1951) which probably appeared in The Morning Leader Newspaper which he worked for at the time a as a political cartoonist. This artwork which is dated September 2nd 1908 is referencing the 1908 Tourist Trophy Race for Motor Cars on the Four Inch Course road racing circuit on The Isle of Man, and The Royal Automobile Club with the character of John Bull and a Motor Racing Driver and Car The name of the course derives from the regulations for the 1908 Tourist Trophy adopted by the Royal Automobile Club, which limited the competitors' engines to a cylinder-diameter of four inches. The Four-Inch Course was adopted by the Auto-Cycle Club for the 1911 Isle of Man TT Races. The Four-Inch Course was subsequently known as the Snaefell Mountain Course or Mountain Course when used for motor-cycle racing. The artwork which features the character of "John Bull" and a Motor Racing Driver with helmet and goggles standing next to his racing car, is done on art card measuring 10.5 inches by 9 inches approx., and is overlaid with a piece of paper which reads. "Cartoon of the day" "John Bull - Look here -this is the kind of four which you need - four inch cable for Oakum my boy, & if you persist in being a danger & a nuisance to the public, you will get it. The Automobile Club has decided to proceed with the four inch race in The Isle of Man - this type of car is capable of a speed of over 80 miles per hour. The other day a motorist was fine £50 for driving a racing car along the public highway at a speed of 80 miles per hour." This is probably the text used to accompany the cartoon when it was printed in the newspaper A few minor marks else in good condition. A NICE EARLY PIECE OF MOTOR RACING THEMED CARTOON ARTWORK by the well know Political Cartoonist of the day, ARTHUR MORELAND. Signed by Illustrator(s).
