Nicholson, on Admiralty stationery, concerning submarine fittings. Admiralty, S.W., 15 July 1905. Single sheet 230 × 203 mm, typed, with Admiralty blind-embossed seal at head; signed in ink at foot. Horizontal folds from original dispatch; light creasing and faint toning, otherwise clean and legible. Very good. An official Admiralty letter written on behalf of Sir John Fisher, then First Sea Lord, acknowledging correspondence and offering comments on the fitting of appliances for pumping air into British submarines while submerged. The letter confirms that such systems had been fitted 'since their first inception'. This is an early letter about submarine technology, with A class subs being launched in 1902 and B class only a year earlier in 1904. Signed by Walter Frederic Nicholson, at this date a junior Admiralty official, who would later rise to become Permanent Secretary of the Air Ministry and appointed KCB in 1922. The letter sits firmly within Fisher's programme of naval modernisation, during a period when submarines were controversial, strategically uncertain, and still regarded by many senior officers as auxiliary or even ungentlemanly weapons. An administrative letter in the formative phase of British submarine policy. Signed by Author(s).

Signed, lined and dated in ink on the verso 'Sir John Redgauntlet & Steenie' with a contemporary transcription of a passage from Sir Walter Scott's Redgauntlet (1824). Some light age toning and minor surface wear, edges with old mounting remnants; overall in very good condition. A watercolour by John Cawse illustrating a scene from 'Wandering Willie's Tale', the inset story within Scott's Redgauntlet. The composition shows Sir John Redgauntlet seated, questioning the tenant Steenie Steenson about rent which Steenie claims to have paid to Redgauntlet's father shortly before his death. With no receipt and no record of payment, Steenie is accused of withholding the money, and under pressure replies that it lies 'in Hell' with your father and his silver whistle'. In the tale, Steenie had indeed paid the rent to the elder Redgauntlet, but fled in fear at the moment of his death and obtained no receipt. After being accused by the son, he is drawn into a supernatural episode in which he encounters the dead laird, silver whistle in hand and his company in a castle near the existing one. He is asked to play the bag pipes whilst the apparitions jig and make merry, but instead he secures proof of payment. The present scene represents the initial confrontation between Steenie and Sir John, immediately before the narrative turns to this ghostly resolution. A signed, lined and dated watercolour by a known exhibiting artist and author, in relation to Walter Scott's Redgauntlet. Cawse is perhaps best known for his book "the art of painting portraits" published shortly after this in 1840. . Signed by Author(s).

Walter Smith (1836-1886) was an English art educator and author. He moved to Massachusetts in 1871, where he was first appointed to Professor of Art Education at the Massachusetts Normal School of Art. Smith later became the Massachusetts State Director of Art Education and Director of Drawing, where he instructed and supervised art teachers. Smith was an important early figure in the field of industrial design. He also wrote books on art education, instruction for teachers, and drawing guides for students. This is the second, revised edition of a booklet aimed at helping students learn to draw. This edition begins with an explanation of the book, particularly explaining that the printing is light so that students can fill in the lines, and that students should use soft pencils to do so. The drawing exercises are mostly for shapes, and vary in complexity Octavo. 22 cm. x 15 cm. 20 pp. Illustrated. Bound in darker tan paper wrappers. Printed on thinner paper than the earlier edition. Condition: Good. Presumed unique original letter. Single sheet 8 inches by 10.5 inches. Department of State stationary. File designation 361.62/170. Letter has been folded to fit into an envelop. [No envelop present] Letter was to the Honorable John Walter Smith. John Walter Smith (February 5, 1845 - April 19, 1925), was a politician and a member of the Democratic Party. He held several public offices representing the state of Maryland. From 1899 to 1900, he was a U.S. congressman; from 1900 to 1904, he was the 44th Governor of Maryland; and from 1908 to 1921, he served in the U.S. Senate. He wrote to the Secretary of State requesting information about Mr. Meyer Bodenheimer, a German soldier and who was thought to be a prisoner of war somewhere in Russia. The Secretary of State indicated he would instruct the American Ambassador at Petrograd to ascertain, if possible, the fate of the soldier and would transmit the substance of the Ambassador's report when received. It is not clear what Secretary Lansing was later able to tell Senator Smith, but current information is that Meyer Bodenheimer was born on February 08, 1882 in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. He was reported as being deceased on October 29, 1915 at Boronovice near Lublin, Poland. The nature of the Senator's interest is unclear, but is assumed to be in response to a Maryland based constituent who was a relative of Mr. Bodenheimer. Robert Lansing (October 17, 1864 - October 30, 1928) was an American lawyer and diplomat who served as Counselor to the State Department at the outbreak of World War I, and then as United States Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson from 1915 to 1920. A conservative pro-business Democrat, he was pro-British and a strong defender of American rights at international law. He was a leading enemy of German autocracy and Russian Bolshevism. Lansing advocated "benevolent neutrality" at the start of World War I, but shifted away from the ideal after increasing interference and violation of the rights of neutrals by Great Britain. Following the sinking of the RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915 by the German submarine U-20, Lansing backed Woodrow Wilson in issuing three notes of protest to the German government. William Jennings Bryan resigned as Secretary of State following Wilson's second note, which Bryan considered too belligerent. Lansing replaced Bryan. Before U.S. involvement in the war, Lansing vigorously advocated freedom of the seas and the rights of neutral nations. He later advocated U.S. participation in World War I, negotiated the Lansing-Ishii Agreement with Japan in 1917 and was a member of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace at Paris in 1919. Wilson made Colonel House his chief foreign policy advisor because Lansing privately opposed much of the Versailles treaty and was skeptical of the Wilsonian principle of self-determination. During Wilson's stroke and illness, Lansing called the cabinet together for consultations on several occasions. In addition, he was the first cabinet member to suggest that Vice President Thomas R. Marshall assume the powers of the presidency. Displeased by Lansing's independence, Edith Wilson requested Lansing's resignation. Lansing stepped down from his post on February 12, 1920. Single sheet, with typing on one side. Signed.

Hardcover. A collection of books from the estate of Beulah Appleton, second wife of Dos Passos' close friend Walter Rumsey Marvin (who was known to Dos Passos as "Rum" or "Rummy"). Many of the books are inscribed to both "Rummy" and either his first wife Betsy or his second wife Beulah (known as "B."), and/or their daughter Miranda. Dos Passos met Marvin, four years his junior, in 1915 when both were traveling to California; for Dos Passos it was a respite from his mother's recent death and before he began his senior year at Harvard. Coincidentally, they ran into each other on several legs of the trip, including at the Grand Canyon, and Dos Passos began a friendship, and soon thereafter a correspondence, both of which continued for the rest of his life. Marvin appears, and his correspondence with Dos Passos (now largely at the University of Virginia) is referenced repeatedly in Townsend Ludington's biography: *John Dos Passos: A Twentieth Century Odyssey* (Dutton, 1980).
