Condition: Gut. pp. 362-365. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: Professor Hanfmanns Jerome Lectures (Tenth Series) are an admirable pendant to Axel Boethius earlier series entitled The Golden House of Nero. Both are exemplary in their breadth of knowledge and freshness of vision; their yield is manifold, always enlightening, and frequently provocative. Hanfmanns expertise as archaeologist and art historian lends authority and stature to the volume; his personal warmth and generosity of mind are omnipresent; scholarly exchanges between the master and the student collaborator are repeatedly evident. - Wikipedia: Alexander Gordon "Sandy" McKay, OC FRSC (December 24, 1924 August 31, 2007) was a Canadian academic who specialized in Vergilian studies.

2 volumes. RARE FIRST EDITION IN PRESENTATION BINDING. A UNIQUE COPY. A family presentation copy, inscribed to George E. Mercer from I. Tod-Mercer and dated [18]96. 8vo, in a beautiful Zaehnsdorf signed binding dated 1896, thus no doubt custom made for the presentation to George E. Mercer. The binding is of full crushed scarlet morocco richly adorned in fine late-Victorian style. The boards feature a wide frame of gilt vines, flowers and thistles which is further ruled in gilt then further surrounded by minutely detailed gilt rolling, the upper boards also lettered "Mercer's Waterloo" in fine gilt stamping, the smooth rounded spines with gilt lettering with a gilt oval surrounded by more gilt vines and flowers which then grow both up and below to fully frame the spine panel, board edges gilt ruled, wide turn-ins gilt tooled in the same motif as the covers, silk endpapers with powder blue moire pattern and further gilt tooling complete this beautiful presentation, a.e.g. xii, 369; viii, 347 pp. An extraordinary set, the condition remains outstanding. The text-block is essentially pristine, the fine bindings show only the most minimal evidence of age. Truly and outstanding and unique copy. A SCARCE AND IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION, SCARCE IN ANY STATE AND THIS AN EXTRAORDINARY COPY. Mercer's 'Journal' is an important source for historians of the Waterloo campaign, as well as a detailed description of the landscape and people of Belgium and France in the early 19th century. It is one of the few accounts of the period written by an artillery officer. Mercer's journals were kept throughout the campaign of 1815 but were not published until 1870, after his death. The work was compiled and written in its finished form some 30 years earlier, from the original notes Mercer wrote contemporaneously, with additions and verifications from correspondence and other sources. It covers the period from April 1815 to January 1816. Although he eventually rose to the rank of general, his fame is as commander of the British G Troop Royal Horse Artillery in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Waterloo. It is also notable for its lengthy descriptions of the countryside and its people. In spite of his position with the British Army, the work is usually found in 20th Century editions in French. Its historical value in the English-speaking nations was largely overlooked till its rediscovery with a Praeger edition in 1970.

Tears to the second leaf (not affecting signature) have been unobtrusively repaired with archival tape, and its blank reverse carries a thin remnant of the mount. One postage fold. Addressed to 'My Dear Broadley' and signed 'Ernest Hart'. Having talked over Broadley's 'brilliant sketch' (no doubt written for Edmund Yates's newspaper The World, of which he was de facto editor) with his wife, they have agreed to ask him to 'modify the impression that our society is exclusively medical or [?] by adding to the sentence wh. speaks of Clarke Wells Lister &c. meeting at W[impole] St. the leading provincial medicos', after words such as "these latter make the acquaintance perhaps of Tenniel . Du Maurier & Sambourne or of Leckie, Seeley & Ray Lankester," whom I grasp as representing the amusing & the serious sides of art & literature'. He concludes: 'As a matter of fact we rarely ever have more than 1/3. doctors, or of any one set at a dinner.' Broadley was a renowned autograph collector as well as " barrister, author, company promoter and social figure. He is best known for being the defence lawyer for Ahmed 'Urabi after the failure of the 'Urabi Revolt." [Wikipedia].

First and sole edition of this scarce shipwreck narrative, inscribed by the author "with the kind regards of the author" on the title page, the name of the recipient cut away. Accompanying this copy is a tipped-in autograph letter signed from the author and dated May 1859, presenting the book to the unknown recipient. The Blenden Hall was a 450 ton cargo ship chartered by the British East India Company to make frequent voyages between the UK and India. Under the command of Captain Alexander Greig, who was accompanied by his son, the author, the Blenden Hall sailed for Bombay on 6 May 1821, carrying 84 passengers and crew; on 22 July a fog descended and she struck a reef off the ominously named Inaccessible Island in the South Atlantic. All but two crew members made it ashore safely, the survivors spending almost three months on the island, subsisting largely on wild celery, seal meat, and penguin, the blood of which was used by the author as ink for his journal. Two parties were despatched to Tristan da Cunha, the nearest inhabited island, to raise the alarm. The first disappeared without a trace; the second, led by the carpenter, successfully made landfall on 3 November. The governor of Tristan da Cunha, the former Royal Artillery corporal William Glass, immediately organized a rescue party, and reached Inaccessible Island on 10 November 1821, relieving the stricken islanders over the following weeks. After staying on the island with Glass for a further two months, the majority of the crew were picked up by the merchant brig Nerina bound for the Cape of Good Hope, and arrived in Cape Town on 21 January 1822. A report of the shipwreck was published in the Asiatic Journal in 1822 by Lieutenant John Pepper of the East India Company, who was a passenger on the Blenden Hall, however the present account is the first complete narrative of the shipwreck. The book is fairly well-represented institutionally but uncommon in commerce, having appeared only once at auction in the last 60 years. Huntress 350c. Octavo. Engraved frontispiece by G. Snyder. Original brown cloth, sometime skilfully rebacked with the original spine laid-down, titles to spine in gilt, covers panelled in blind with decorative cornerpieces, new endpapers. Library shelf ticket to front pastedown. Slight lean to spine, extremities a little worn, binding firm, a few small blemishes to covers, a little foxing and offsetting to preliminaries, occasional spotting to text but generally clean, last few pages unevenly trimmed; a very good copy.
