Add to basketReprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 362-376. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - A good and clean copy. - From the text: When Francis Nicholson, former governor of the colony of Virginia, died on 5 March, 1728, he bequeathed to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (now the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel) a lifetime's accumulation of valuable papers. Among these documents were copies of two Latin compositions by a student of the fledgling College of William and Mary--a short Latin quitrent poem and a Latin oration which the author, John Shelton, titles a munusculum, or little gift. The copy of the poem was purchased in 1943 by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation from William H. Robertson Ltd., bookseller, who was acting as factor for the United Society, and it was translated and discussed in an issue of The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography in 1988. The copy of the munusculum reposes in Rhodes House Library, Oxford with the Society's archives (shelfmark Bi/269). To date, it has been noticed by no general history and no specialized study of the College. It is a rarity since it and the Latin poem alone survive as reflections of the work of the Latin classroom of the early College. Presentation of the munusculum at this point takes on a special appropriateness since the College of William and Mary, founded by royal charter in 1693, is currently celebrating its tercentenary.
