Volume 4 of Deutsche Bücherei der ungarischen Schachwelt, First edition. 2nd international tournament, Ostend This tournament was considerably stronger than the previous edition and the strongest tournament in Belgium for several years. The main tournament must have been a rather thrilling affair, with many unexpected results. The first round saw the confrontation between the two favourites: Fine and Keres. Keres won, but was beaten in rounds three and four by Tartakower and Grob, respectively. For Grob, this was already the third time he won on time in this tournament! In round five, he also defeated Fine, giving him a very comfortable lead. Grob's losses against List and Koltanowski allowed the favourite to catch up with him in the final round. In fact, the Swiss master was in serious trouble against Dunkelblum, but finally escaped with a perpetual check. The three Belgian players were never in the running. (Dyner was actually Polish, but had been living in Belgium for quite some years.) Condition: Rebound. Some pages with tears tape reinforced chipped and soiled else fair of a scarce tournament book.

Excellent debut publication by contemporary Belgian photographer, a visual diary of the coastal Belgium town of Ostende, home to the masterful modern painter Leon Spilliaert, whose moody, alienated canvases seem to inform the work here. Very finely printed, entirely comprised of full-page black and white photos. Impressive book in fine condition.

With 36 competitors and 326 games played, Ostende 1906 was one of the biggest chess tournaments of all time. Only Lasker and Tarrasch opted not to play, making it also an immensely powerful event that saw the introduction of several new young players on to the international scene. The story of this organisationally complicated and controversial event is told elsewhere in this book and so need not be repeated here. However, I believe it is worth repeating a view I have expressed previously, that great games and theoretically important games often disappear for lack of a tournament book. It is a great shame that this tournament has had to wait for nearly a hundred years for the chess world to do it justice. This book contains not only all of the available games from the tournament but also annotations by many of the great players of the day. Their verbatim reproduction will, I hope, enable the reader to re-enter that period when the open games of the nineteenth century were giving way to the closed openings of the twentieth. For those who are interested, there may still be a game or two to be found in the chess columns of the Russian, Polish, German and Italian press. Condition: Neae rine.

In the Master's tournament 36 participants were divided into four group of nine each, labelled A, B, C and D. First-round pairings saw Group A play against Group B, and Group C against D. After the first stage the players with the three lowest scores in each group retired from the tourney, with the consolation prizes according to their scores. The remaining six masters in each of the four of the four groups proceeded to play a second stage - A playing C and B meeting D. The two lowest scores from each group then withdrew with further consolation prizes. Of the sixteen remaining competitors (four in each group), A then played D and B faced C - thus completing the round-robin among the four groups. A fourth stage pitted group members against each other - A playing A, etc. The seven lowest players were then eliminated. Of the remainder Schlechter didn't appear destined for the winner's circle. Four successive victories in the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th rounds (Johner, Marco Fahrni and Bur) had propelled him into a half-point lead over Maroczy. A loss to Bernstein in the 17th round dropped him into a tie for first with Maroczy and Janowski. The blow by blow continuation is here in contained in this wonderful production.
