He photographed places and times in a way that Christopher Isherwood described in his novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939): "I am a camera with its shuter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking. [.] Some day, all this will have to be developed, carefully printed, fixed." Many of the buildings, places and people in Jef Van Eynde's photographs are no longer part of the city of Ostend. But they were developed, carefully printed, fixed. [Back cover].

August 1882. --- Max Waldstein war ein Sohn des deutschen Erfinders, Optikers und Unternehmers Jakob Waldstein (1810-1876) sowie ein Bruder des Schriftstellers Ludwig Waldstein (1836-1919) und des Optikers und Hoflieferanten Simon Waldstein (1837-1902). --- Im Wiener Adressbuch von 1883 ist Max Waldstein verzeichnet als Rechnungs-Official bei der Direktion für administrative Statistik, Minoritenplatz 2. --- Laut dem BLKÖ trat Waldstein 1860 "aus dem Geschäfte seines Vaters in den Staatsdienst, in welchem er jetzt in der k. k. statistischen Centralcommission die Stelle eines Rechnungsrevidenten bekleidet." --- Gerichtet an die Musikalien-Handlung Jungmann in Wien-Neubau. --- Transkription: "Geehrter Herr! Im Sohne entwickelte sich frühzeitig Lust und Neigung zur Poesie und eine große Leidenschaft für das Theater. Roger Hebbelinck was a Belgian artist who was born in Brussels in 1912 and who died there in 1987. He was a painter, etcher, watercolorist and cinematographer. Education at the Academy in Brussels under Bastien, Delville, Van Strydonck, Stevens and Mathieu and at the Academy in Ixelles under Omer Dierckx. At the Academy of Brussels he was taught watercolor painting by I. van Mens and engraving by J. van Santen. He etched a large number of picturesque city corners in historic towns. He provided the etchings for the book Les Villages Illusoires by E. Verhaeren. As a filmmaker, he made the documentary La Naissance d'une Eau-forte, which won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and a documentary about the construction of the Atomium. Before the war, he set up an etching printing studio as a visual artist and etched many picturesque cityscapes in Belgium. He also etched and watercolored in the Netherlands (Bergen op Zoom) and the south of France and Spain. Also special are his color etchings that he made after works by his colleagues V. de Saedeleer and A. Saverys. He signed it with the pseudonym "Belin". . From the press: ?As an accurate observer, R.H. his whole soul in the rendering of his subjects which he manages to capture with great precision, but which also bear witness to a poetic vision. He masters his technique in an exemplary way and thus fits in with the tradition of etching practiced by Ensor and De Bruycker. His painting, however, leans again towards post-symbolism, apart from the surrealistic visual language. The entire oeuvre of R.H. shows that he is again and again fascinated by human existence in general and the environment to which the fate of the individual is connected in particular, which can be a city (Rome, Bruges) as well as the countryside or villages in Italy or Spain.? Anvers, 7 juillet 1761, manuscript on paper, written in ink, in-folio, (12) pp (3 blank) , written in French, neat handwriting, signed at the end in holograph by Prince de Ligne , Comte de Calesberg ( shaky signature) , Duc d'Ursel , marquis François De Los Rios , Vicomte d'Audenarde - Vicomte de Lalaing ( share holders or ''interessés ''). Written statement, original document, of the meeting organised in Antwerp on the 7th of july 1761 by Mr. D'Henssens, only director of the Compagnie d'Ostende ( co-director Meulenaer had died). The company was in liquidation since 1731 when it had to stop its activities on demand of the English in return of their acceptance of the Pragmatic Sanction of Charles VI. According this statement there was still a capital of Fl. 31463 available. Another important point was that the Austrian emperor never had paid a compensation , contrary to his promise , when he closed the company. The meeting decides that the directors must press this point. Provenance; from the archives of Charles de Proli ; photostat of a typed letter from 23 May 1945 refers to Theophile Smekens who was still occupied with Proli's bancruptcy in the late 19th c. ( see Denucé, Antwerps Archievenblad 2e reeks, 7 , 1932 nr.1). The fact that this document was in the hands of Charles Proli is a sure indication of his involvement although his name is not present here. We have other archive records relating to Charles Proli and the ''Société Impériale de Trieste pour le commerce Aziatique'' on offer.
