Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Book condition is very good. Board board clean, except the front has two small dot marks, back is clean. Dust jacket very good. spine intact. Text body clean. This book is a hymn of praise to a people who have survived the ordeal which began with the coming of the white man. It is a delight to the eye; it is a source of wisdom to those with the eyes to see. ' The Land Council is particularly impress with your sensitive respect for Tiwi culture and traditions, and the manner in which you have portrayed it " The Tiwi Land Council. SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Portrait of a People: The Tiwi of Northern Australia is an authoritative, acclaimed photographic book by celebrated German-Australian photographer Heide Smith, with text and layout design by Brian Smith. Published by Hobbs Point Publishing in 2008, the 224-page hardcover volume serves as a comprehensive visual and narrative record documenting the history, lifestyle, and culture of the Tiwi people. The imagery represents a deep 20-year retrospective resulting from Smith's numerous immersive visits to Bathurst and Melville Islands between 1987 and 2007.Key Details & Background Cultural Sensitivity: Traditionally, Tiwi Pukumani law forbids using the name or image of a deceased individual for up to twelve months. To make the book possible, the Tiwi Land Council granted a special exemption, allowing these important historical portraits to be permanently preserved and published. Visual Scope: The layout spans over 270 large-format photographs and 200 index thumbnails, blending black-and-white portraits with color landscapes. The Text: Beyond a collection of images, the volume functions as a memoir. It incorporates personal diary entries written by Heide Smith during her time on the islands. It highlights her adoption as a "sister" by esteemed Tiwi elder Gerardine Tungatalum, who acted as her primary guide and interpreter. Critique: Reviews have widely praised the work for its respectful depiction of Indigenous identity. Elizabeth Keenan of Time Magazine famously noted, "Even when her subjects are naked, they are clothed in dignity. they are simply themselves.". Signed by Author(s).
