Edge and corner wear; scuffed and scratched; head and tail of the spine have a couple of small splits in them; corners are bumped and rubbed; liquid stain on the base of the last few pages (does not affect readability); missing the rfep; overall still a nice used first edition! Wonderfully well-preserved for its 150+ year age! Brown leather with gilt lettering on the spine and a gilt design on the front board. 454 very clean unmarked and uncreased spiritual and historical pages! Few tiny page turn ins.Text within a single line frame, the occasional light spot otherwise the text is clean. Before the half title page are four un-numbered card leaves, page [2] with an additional coloured and gilt frontispiece, and a similarly coloured architectural title page [3] with the legend - London. R.A.Suttaby at the lower end. Dark maroon morocco binding the foredges with protective brass onlays and working clasp, both upper and lower covers with a central recessed oval lozenge, the upper cover with INRI in ivory floriated letters, the lower cover with the same letters in blind, both covers with an outer single line fillet frame with flower heads in the corners. The spine with four raised bands, divided into panels by double fillet lines in blind, the title - Church Services , lettered directly in gilt. Marbled endpapers and gilt inner dentelles. Overall, a very attractive Book of Common Prayer in very good condition. This is a Suttaby binding, they were based in London and were very active during the mid to late nineteenth century, and renowned for their workmanship and elegant bindings especially pocket books and devotional literature. We have identified the Book of Common Prayer as Griffiths - 1861.2.
