Softcover. Condition: neu. 1. Auflage. Studien zur Geschichtsforschung des Altertums, Band 45 442 pages. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- REZENSION in: GNOMON, 96 (2024) 3: "[.] this book provides a carefully composed overview of the numerous coins and monuments of the reign of Severus Alexander. Combining detailed descriptions of the sources with a rich bibliography, this study is a true goldmine for any future scholar dealing with the last of the Severans. And even if S. could have given greater attention to integrating his sources in the long line of Roman imperial representation, its students will doubtlessly find use for it, too."

The image size is ca. 7.1 x 10.4 inch.Antique print, number XXX. It is titled: 'Imp Caes M Avr Sev Alexander Avg' and it shows Alexander Severus (Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander Augustus, 208-235), the 26th Emperor of the Roman Empire, and the last of the Severan dynasty. This original print originates from an edition of Hubert Goltzius' 'Icones Imperatorum Romanorum' (this edition published in Antwerp by Balthasar Moretus ca. 1645). The first edition of this work was published between 1557 and 1560 in Antwerp by J. Coppens van Diest. Given the appearance of eg. Rudolph II in this edition, some portraits were added after Goltzius' time in later editions.Artists and Engravers: Hubert Goltzius is often credited with etching the portraits. Christoffel Jegher made the woodcuts. Christoffel Jegher (1596-1652/3) was a wood engraver born at Antwerp. He worked for Rubens from 1627, and is probably a pupil of Christoffel van Sichem. Hubert Goltzius (1526-1583) was a Dutch humanist author, antiquarian and numismatist. He was born in Venlo, and studied under Lambert Lombard in Liege and later in Antwerp. He settled in Bruges in 1558, and starts publishing several works on ancient numismatics.Condition: Fair, given age. The top left and right corners with paper loss (backed with contemporary paper and acid-free archival tape), the lower left corner chipped. Colouring faded.
