In general the Macmillan and Methuen Kipling pocket editions suffer from predictable damage due to their soft, flexible lambskin covers and compact travel format. The thin leather at the top and bottom of the spine chips, tears, and cracks horizontally from frequent opening and pulling. The light-sensitive crimson dye heavily bleaches, often turning the exposed spines from bright red to a dull brown or pale pink. The iconic gold-leaf decorations—including the elephant head medallions—easily rub away from handling. Because the covers are limp rather than rigid, the structural stress splits the inner joints, causing covers and pages to detach. The edges and endpapers are prone to yellowing (tanning) and developing rusty brown spots (foxing). This copy, the first red pocket edition, is in generally good condition. All edges are gilt. No writing, marks, or underlining except for an inscription dated Dec. 1899 on the front free endpaper. No bookplates. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true, and the corners are square. Boards are slightly bumped, and there is a small gouge (1/4") on the front cover. There is no dust jacket. This copy has some other significant flaws including separation along the front hinge at the top and bottom 2" of the book. This separation goes to about page 3, which is no longer attached to the book (but remains intact). The endpapers along the rear hinge are also separated from each other. The title page has a 4" tear from the top, and a rear flyleaf is missing a large chunk. There is some foxing to the last few pages, as well as some discoloration to page 310. In general, however, the pages are crisp and clean, and the gold gilt lettering on the front board and spine remains intact. This is still an appealing copy that will look great on any bookshelf.
