Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 115pp. First published in 1957. Navy and oatmeal grey wrappers. Corners sharp, spine solid, no wear. The copy belonged to Costas Papaliolios, Harvard Physics Professor, with joint appointment to Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Ch. 1, "General Ideas and Simple Applications," bears Papaliolios' red ink markings, formulas and marginalia; also included is an index card in his writing with two columns of formulas, entitled "MKS (rationalized)" and "CGS (Gaussian) (unrationalized)". Papaliolios was professor of physics emeritus at Harvard University, where he taught from 1965 until his 2001 retirement. He helped devise a method to search for planets orbiting stars. In a burst of creativity, Papaliolios helped devise an elegant method to search for planets orbiting distant stars. By using a specially tailored telescope aperture, a star's glare can be suppressed, so that nearby planets may be seen. This furthered NASA's main goals for decades. In rare praise, the "Confidential Guide to Courses," a student-produced handbook noted for its no-holds-barred harshness, stated, "Professor Costas D. Papaliolios, in addition to his melodic name, is a wonderful human being. Always happy to see you, he welcomes questions from the class and his door is always open. He is one of the few professors that will stop you in the Yard to say hello, even if he doesn't remember your name.". Inscribed by Author(s).

Drafted and signed by King John of England in 1215, the Magna Carta was an attempt to mediate a peaceful conclusion to the First Barons' War, a conflict within the English feudal system. The charter outlined the rights and privileges of various groups within society, offering protection from arbitrary imprisonment, unlawful taxation, and unchecked royal authority, while also establishing the principle that all free men were entitled to justice and due process of law. The authors trace the evolution of the charter's concepts within feudal tenure, a system with roots in the Norman Conquest, and explore the broader implications of these ideas for later constitutional developments and the freedoms we enjoy today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
