5pp., 12mo. The letter proper is three pages long, on a bifolium, and is accompanied by a two-page 'list of times & places' on a separate leaf. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. With 18 x 23 cm letterhead, on the cover of which Thornton has written 'To | Sir Robert Head. Bart. | III | Zimmer Strasse 97 | Hier.', with his signature 'C. Thornton' in the bottom left-hand corner. The letter begins: 'Dear Lady Head, | I inclose herewith a list of times & places for tonight's function, which will I hope prove sufficient.' Thornton is also inclosing 'a card, to be placed in the Coachman's hat, and which will enable your carriage to get out of the ordinary ruck'. He asks her to be 'very careful to recover the card from the Coachman', and to return it, 'as we shall require it in the evening'. He ends by stating when the Thorntons propose to leave their house, 'as even with the Cards, progress may be slow.' The separate leaf, carrying the 'list of times & places' referred to in the letter, is also on an official letterhead, and begins: 'Invitation for 7 o'c precisely. | Carriages to enter Palace by Portal No. 5 | and to proceed to the door of the Staircase Wendeltreppe | To assemble in the Brandenburgische Kammer and Rothe [sic] Kammer. | Throne room in the Rittersaal. | After the reception, we shall descend the staircase known as Weisse-Saal Treppe, and the carriages will be in waiting under Portal No. 3'.

Add to basketSee Berlin's entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Philip Dosse (often addressed, as in this letter, as 'Dossé') was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018. Both items 1p, landscape 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged. ONE (16 October 1975): She informs Dosse that 'Sir Isaiah Berlin is in Australia for the whole of this term' and will not return until December.' Regardless of the deadline, she thinks it is 'fairly likely he would regretfully say that he couldn't' review 'Mrs. Meier's [sic] autobiography', as 'he has a fairly large backlog of writing to catch up with!' TWO (4 November 1975): She has heard from Berlin, who asks her to tell Dosse that 'he fears he cannot review Mrs. Meir's autobiography for you even if you could await his return: he has so much work to do that he has had to decide to undertake no reviewing for at least two years.'.

Approximately 15,000 items are listed with full author- title descriptions, collation and very extensive notes and references, as well as an index to the Hebrew titles of all books. A massive bibliography cataloging over three centuries of Hebrew manuscripts and books collected in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Moravian bibliographer, Moritz Steinschneider (1816-1907) is noted as the greatest recorder of Jewish literature with this work establishing his fame. Moritz Steinschneider received his early instruction in Hebrew from his father, Jacob Steinschneider (b. 1782; d. March 1856), who was both an expert Talmudist and well versed in secular science. The house of the elder Steinschneider was the rendezvous of a few progressive Hebraists, among whom was his brother-in-law, the physician and writer Gideon Brecher. At the age of 6 Steinschneider was sent to the public school, which was still an uncommon choice for Jews in the Austro-Hungarian empire at the time; and at the age of 13 he became the pupil of Rabbi Nahum Trebitsch, whom he followed to Mikulov, Moravia in 1832. In 1833, in order to continue his Talmudic studies, he went to Prague, where he remained until 1836. In 1836 Steinschneider went to Vienna to continue his studies, and, on the advice of his friend Leopold Dukes, he devoted himself especially to Oriental and Neo-Hebrew literatures, and most particularly to bibliography, which would become his principal focus. His countryman Abraham Benisch and Moravian Albert Löwy also were studying there at the time. In Lowy's room in 1838 they inaugurated among intimate (and lifelong) friends a proto-Zionist society called "Die Einheit". The society's objective was to promote the welfare of the Jewish people, and in order to realize this objective, they advocated the settlement of Palestine by Austrian Jews. Their objective had to be kept secret for fear it would be put down by the government; England became regarded as the country likely to welcome the new movement. In 1841 Lowy was sent to London as an emissary of the Students' Jewish National Society; Benisch also arrived in England the same year. Somewhat abandoned, Steinschneider would later withdraw from the society completely in 1842, viewing the scheme as impractical compared to his studies. As a Jew on the continent, Steinschneider was prevented from entering the Oriental Academy; and for the same reason he was unable even to obtain permission to make extracts from the Hebrew books and manuscripts in the Imperial Library, Vienna. In spite of these drawbacks, he continued his studies in Arabic, Syriac, and Hebrew with Professor Kaerle at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University. He had at this juncture the intention of adopting the rabbinical career. In Vienna, as formerly in Prague, he earned a livelihood by giving lessons, teaching Italian among other subjects. For political reasons he was compelled to leave Vienna and decided to go to Berlin; but, being unable to obtain the necessary passport, he remained in Leipzig. At the university there he continued the study of Arabic under Professor Fleischer. At this time, he began the translation of the Qur'an into Hebrew and collaborated with Franz Delitzsch in editing Aaron ben Elijah's 'Etz Chayyim (Leipzig, 1841); but the rules of the Austrian censorship did not permit the publication of his name as coeditor. While in Leipzig he contributed a number of articles on Jewish and Arabic literature to Pierer's Universal Encyklopädie . . . .
