The catalogue published in connection with the exhibition by the Benrath Palace and Park Foundation shows objects and spatial installations by the conceptual and performance artist James Lee Byars. The… photographer Claudio Abate proves to be a congenial observer, subtly sensing the idea in the architecture of the exhibition venue, following the lines of perfect axes and photographically realizing the dialogue between space and artwork. The canon of forms of Byars' sculptures includes cubes, spheres, cylinders, pyramids and stars, which have symbolic value. Materials and colors, especially white marble, velvet, black and red, are also intended to emphasize the semantic level. Byars associated the 'gold background' with the intangible, the absolute or the spiritual, which visually exaggerated the perfect form, the sphere. Parallel English/German text. VG/VG-. Claudio Abate (Roma, 1943 - Roma,2017) è considerato uno dei più grandi fotografi del Novecento. Ha immortalato con le sue immagini le avanguardie teatrali e artistiche contemporanee soprattutto nella Roma degli anni Sessanta e Settanta, dall'arte povera, al minimalismo, cercando di cogliere nei suoi scatti il rapporto tra l'opera d'arte e l'artista. Ha iniziato a lavorare giovanissimo al Press Service Agency ed è stato assistente di E. Lessing. Per undici anni è stato fotografo di scena collaborando soprattutto con Carmelo Bene. Tra gli artisti con cui ha lavorato si ricordano: J. Kounellis, M. Merz, P. Pascali. Tra le mostre più recenti: alla Maison de la Photographie nel 2006, al Mart di Rovereto e all'Accademia di Francia di Villa Medici (2007), The artist's eye alla Glucksmann Gallery di Cork (2013) e l'ampia retrospettiva "Superficie sensibile", allestita nel 2023 al MAXXI di Roma. Tutti gli artisti con cui ho parlato hanno sottolineato l'aspetto dell'amicizia: "Si è preso la libertà di vivere in mezzo a noi e questo gli ha permesso di capire come noi intendevamo il lavoro" dice Mattiacci".
