With the support of Konrad Oberhuber, the Director of the Albertina, Dossi embarked on researching the collection?s history, drawing on limited available literature including works by Walter Koschatzky, Selma Krasa, and Alice Strobl. Dossi?s primary goal is to document the facts surrounding the collection's formation and development while distinguishing verified information from speculative narratives. This rigorous exploration of archival sources revealed that fewer authentic documents have survived from the collection?s early years compared to later periods. Notably, by 1919, many records were lost due to the scattering and destruction of personal archives. In contrast, the period following Duke Albert is extensively documented, featuring accession lists and inventories that date from 1822 onwards.The book presents significant findings related to the collection?s history, including details on the Raccolta Durazzo, which was the first large print collection initiated by Duke Albert, his criteria for acquisitions, and his relationships with contemporary artists and collectors. Richly illustrated, the volume features a selection of masterpieces that not only reflect Albert's acquisitions but also highlight key provenance research outcomes. The publication stands as both a comprehensive historical account and a visual testament to the Albertina?s artistic treasures. Further works are planned, including a focused exploration of the Italian drawings and their provenance.
