First edition. First edition of this rare 17th-century anatomical and theological treatise by the eminent Danish physician and anatomist Thomas Bartholini (1616â"1680), most famous for his discovery of the human lymphatic system. In De Latere Christi Aperto, Bartholin offers a scholarly and scientific reflection on the physical nature of Christâs Passionâ"particularly the wound in Christâs sideâ"combining medical observation with theological discourse. Written in the learned Latin of the period, the work exemplifies the eraâs fusion of faith and anatomy, where religious mysteries were examined through the lens of empirical reasoning. The volume also includes additional epistles by Claudius Salmasius and other notable scholars (De Cruce Epistolae), engaging in critical debate over crucifixion practices, biblical interpretation, and human anatomy. The treatise demonstrates Bartholinâs skill in correlating scriptural accounts with physiological realism, a hallmark of early modern medical-humanistic inquiry. This blend of science, devotion, and classical scholarship makes the work an important document in the intellectual history of the 17th centuryâ"bridging Renaissance anatomy, Reformation theology, and Baroque scholarship. Condition: Small octavo (approximately 16 cm). Bound in contemporary full mottled calf, spine with gilt ornamental tooling in six compartments and a gilt-lettered morocco title label reading âBARTHOLIN DE LATEREâ. Binding shows moderate surface wear, rubbing, and corner loss, with cracking to joints but still sound and complete. Pages are crisp and clean with only minor age toning, scattered foxing, and light marginal stains; title page with early ownership inscription and later booksellerâs label (âH. Estoup, Paris â" Livres Anciens et Modernes Rares & Curieuxâ). Text block tight, edges trimmed. Overall good to very good.
