A very nice copy in contemporary binding of Lewis's free translation of Madame de Naubert's celebrated gothic novel, first published in German in 1789 as Elisabeth, Erbin von Toggenburg, oder Geschichte der Frauen von Sargans in der Schweiz. Lewis's rendition was not well received; the Critical Review (July 1807), in particular, singling it out for opprobrium: 'ghosts, bones, chains, dungeons, castles, forests, murders, and rapine pass before us in long order, till sated with horrors and habituated to their view we regard them all with as much composure as an undertaker contemplates the last melancholy rites of his mortal brethren'. But the public evidently had not grown weary of 'ghosts, bones and murders', a third edition being announced in the summer of 1807. A particularly scarce title.

Benedicte Naubert, (1756 - 1819), war eine deutsche Schriftstellerin, die überwiegend anonym über 50 historische Romane veröffentlichte. Sie gilt als eine der Begründerinnen des historischen Romans in Deutschland. Sie war zweimal verheiratet, zunächst 1797 mit dem Rittergutsbesitzer und Kaufmann Lorenz Wilhelm Holderrieder aus Naumburg und nach dessen Tod im Jahr 1800 mit Johann Georg Naubert, der ebenfalls Kaufmann in Naumburg war. Naubert veröffentlichte fast alle ihre Bücher anonym. Ohne ihre Erlaubnis wurde ihre Identität in einem Artikel in der Zeitung für die elegante Welt 1817 aufgedeckt. Ihren Roman Rosalba (1817) zeichnete sie darauf mit ihrem eigenen Namen. Heute ist Benedikte Naubert weitgehend unbekannt. Ihre Sammlung der Neuen Volksmärchen der Deutschen (17891793; Neuauflage 2001) ist lange vor der Sammlung der Brüder Grimm (1812-15) wichtig geworden. Es handelt sich um Kunstmärchen, literarische Gestaltungen historischer Stoffe unter Einbeziehung volkstümlicher Motive, nicht um eine Märchensammlung im späteren Sinn.
