Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. DESGODETZ, Antoine. LES EDIFICES ANTIQUES DE ROME. Farnborough, Hants: Gregg Press, 1969. Large folio. Cloth. (ii), (xiv), 323 pages. A particularly handsome facsimile of the first edition (Paris 1682.) It is a handsome survey of the monuments and buildings of ancient Rome. It is one of the earliest and most accurate architectural studies of the ancient monuments the city of Rome. The accuracy of Desgodetz's measurements, the brilliance o his drawings, and the beauty of the engraved plates have made this a most respected and desired book. Jefferson owned a copy of the 1779 edition, and relied heavily of its plates in designing many of the buildings and respectiv details on the buildings at the University of Virginia, especially the great Rotunda at the end of the Lawn, which is based upon Desgodetz's meticulous drawings of the Pantheon in Rome. A little foxing on top edge and side, otherwise a very good copy and tight binding.

First Edition
Couverture rigide. Condition: Très bon. Edition originale. ______________________________________________________________________________ _____ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION : Contemporary full calf, gilt spine in seven compartments. Folio (434x288 mm), frontispiece, xi-(1)-140 pages and 137 plates. Joints split. Caps and corners worn. Second edition. A new edition by Claude Antoine Jombert, who had just acquired the original copperplates from the descendants of the architect. Antoine Desgodetz was sent to Rome, where he stayed for sixteen months in 1676?1677, to survey and measure ancient monuments with great precision. The purpose was well conceived, as he had already observed discrepancies in the dimensions?and thus the proportions?given in classical works on the subject. The result was a work of obvious utility and great beauty: Desgodetz's drawings were engraved by excellent artists, including Louis de Chastillon, Nicolas Guérard, and Jean and Pierre Lepautre. Each plate is accompanied by a facing descriptive notice specifying the measurements of the various elements and pointing out the errors in earlier treatises. The work was justly admired and underwent several reissues. It is all the more surprising to learn that, unlike most ancient treatises, it has not lost its value: even today's archaeologists?far more demanding than the amateurs of the past?still recognize its accuracy and usefulness. A complete copy, with all 137 required plates.

The stain has mostly dissipated here, but not entirely. 2 plates for the Temple de Faune. 3 plates for Temple de Vesta. 4 plates for Temple de Vesta a Tivoli. 4 plates for Temple de la Fortune Virile. and continues for 321 pages with a full page plate on nearly every other page (137 in all) -- printed with text on the other side. All traces of the dampstain are completely gone by page 140 or so. Pages faded from age & with the dampstain to the first third or so of the book, gradually decreasing in size until disappearing. An important collection of drawings of the ruins of Rome. Out of an abundance of caution, we have consulted the online catalog for Brooklyn Public Library and we find there that there is no mention of this book. First published as Les Edifices Antiques De Rome, Paris, 1682. Desgodetz (1653-1728) was sent by the French Academy to produce a survey of the monuments and buildings of ancient Rome. It was one of the earliest and most accurate architectural studies of the ancient monuments of the city of Rome. The accuracy of Desgodetz's measurements, the brilliance of his drawings, and the beauty of the engraved plates made it a most popular work, as a consequence there was a great demand for an English edition. George Marshall, a little known architect, took on this task. When the first volume appeared in 1771 it was dedicated to King George III, and its thought that the publication was arranged and paid for by the King himself. The second volume wasn't issued until 1795 after Marshall's death. The architectural publishers, I. and J. Taylor, had purchased the remaining sheets of volume I and simultaneously reissued them, with a new title page giving their imprint, along with volume II. RIBA 860; Harris, 196; Fowler, 85.

Desgodets Antoine (1653-1728):was hired by French Prime Minister Jacques-Louis Colbert to visit Rome and make engravings and measurements of notable structures of classical antiquity, including multiple engravings of floor plans, elevations, cross sections and exterior decorations. French artists and architects unable to travel to Italy were able to use Desgodetz's studio to emulate ancient Roman architectural practices in their works. The work was reprinted in 1729 and again in 1779, thus helping not only Baroque architects, but also followers of the developing neoclassical approach to architecture, especially Robert Adam.
