Letters of the alphabet, geometric shapes, leaf shapes, foliage, household objects (flask, jug, scissors, candle, watering can), also buildings, boat, church & decorative flourishes. 96 short paragraphs describe the simple method in relation to the illustrations. The technique replaced the practice of tracing engravings, & was seen to be more accurate being based on a geometrical basis. Hillardt's educational tenets encouraged learning first by the familiar, & to make learning a pleasure, to copy the object directly so forming ideas by practice rather than theory. Earlier educators such as J A Comenius (1592-1670), and Rousseau, who emphasised education according to nature were influential in late 18th and early 19th century thinking, leading to ideas of the 20th century educators Pestalozzi, & Fröbel. The second improved edition 'Zweite durchaus verbesserte und sehr vermehrte Auflage mit 31 in Stein gestochenen Tafeln'.
