Un ex-libris estampé à chaud sur le 1er plat "Marco Antonio Petit et Amicis", celui du Dr Marc-Antoine Petit (1766-1811), chirurgien-Major de l'Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon, membre du Conseil municipal, et de l'Académie des Sciences, Belles-Lettres et Arts de Lyon, à qui appartenait ce livre. Saissy (1756-1822) fut docteur en médecine à Paris, puis chirurgien et médecin-major de la Compagnie royale d'Afrique, où il exerça la médecine militaire en Algérie. De retour à Lyon, il fut reçu au Collège de chirurgie en 1789 puis docteur en médecine à Valence. Il publia en 1808 une étude sur les animaux hibernants qui lui valut un prix de l'Institut National. Il ne commença à s'intéresser aux maladies des oreilles que tardivement, et a largement contribué au développement de l'otologie par son "Essai sur les maladies de l'oreille interne" paru en 1827, un des rares traités des maladies d'oreille de la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Cet "article" pionnier de Saissy, con…stituant la 1ère édition de son mémoire (qui ne paraîtra que 8 ans plus tard sous forme de livre), occupe les pages 36-126 de ce volume. Ce volume (qui commence à l'article "Oreille" et s'achève à l'article "Ouverture cadavérique") fait partie du célèbre dictionnaire encyclopédique en 60 volumes parus chez Panckoucke entre 1812 et 1822 (meilleur dictionnaire encyclopédique français de médecine, avec celui de Dechambre, et sans doute le plus recherché). LE CELEBRE ESSAI sur les maladies de l'oreille interne de Saissy publié à titre posthume en 1827 (soit huit ans plus tard) EST LA REPRODUCTION PRATIQUEMENT TEXTUELLE DU MEMOIRE ("article") FIGURANT DANS CE VOLUME (en dehors de l'ajout d'une page de conclusion et d'une planche dans l'Essai). La différence du nombre de pages s'explique par une impression en plus gros caractères dans l'Essai. Presque tous les bibliographes et historiens citent uniquement l'Essai publié en 1827, semblant méconnaître cette similitude entre les deux textes. Ce texte constitue l'un des meilleurs ouvrages d'otologie de cette époque traitant non seulement des maladies de l'oreille interne, mais aussi de celles du tympan et de la trompe d'Eustache.Jean-Antoine Saissy (1756-1822), premier auriste lyonnais et un des premiers auristes français, décrit une bougie pour la trompe d'Eustache et fut probablement le premier à utiliser cet instrument.
